Best of the B1G: Wide Receivers

Chad – You need to keep in mind that Campbell's reputation as a WR coach was built on a level of athlete at Michigan that far surpasses the kind of players Iowa is able to consistently recruit. Great players can make any coach look like a genius.

Truth be told the most recent one Mario Manningham was a 3 star and ran a 4.7 something forty. Our WR's are athletic and talented enuff.....

Homer I disagree on Ebert- he caught an unreal percentage of his targets and averaged over 11.8 yards per target not catch. He was the only Big Ten receiver in the top 10 in that category.
Northwestern may have the best group of wide outs- especially if you throw in super bac(TE/ H- back) Dunsmore. MSU is the other team that I feel has the deepest corps of receivers in the conference. I want to explore each team's units in depth eventually but it will have to wait a few days.

Truth be told you are completely full of crap - coming out of HS Super Mario was one of the top five players in Ohio.

Well I do apologize, incidentally your bed side manner is very appealing. I was clearly wrong, I don't know why but I thought I read way back when he was a 3 star which surprised me at the time. He did however run a very, very slow forty time in Indy. A 4.67 or worse.

All the same lots of 3 star WR's in the NFL ours are fine whether you care to agree or not.

Anything else...

Key factor overlooked in this list . . . McNutt is also breaking in a "new" QB. I like both McNutt and JVB, but this is a relationship that could go either way. We'll see. The joy of preseason lists . . .

I’m inclined to agree that the JVB to McNutt combo is well practiced. Unless I’m all wet my memory suggests he seemed more comfortable throwing to McNutt in that tOSU game than anyone else. Also it seems his comfort level with Davis is strong to as it would be with both of them taking 2nd team reps over the last couple years.

I think Da'Jon McKnight should be higher. He played on the truly crapulent Gophers offense last year and still had more receptions, more yards, and equal TDs as DJK last year. If he played for any other team, I think he's in the top 5.

spudhawk -

I think that Ebert is plenty good ... however, I liken him to Ed Hinkel. Both guys were/are "money in the bank" ... however, would you put them in the same category as Benn of the Illini or White of MSU? I wouldn't. I think that guys like Benn and White brought a little extra to the table.

I think that Ebert and many (but not all) of the Northwestern WRs tend to benefit from the system.

That's almost enough for me to put him at #1 lol. Hinkel is my favorite receiver of the Ferentz era.

here are some some quick and dirty rankings for the Big Ten units we face including Iowa.

9: Minnesota- lost two wide outs although they do return McKnight. TE Eric Lair is a solid pass catcher but unless Gray moves back to WR they are likely the least talented and unproven group Iowa will face.

8: Nebraska- again return leading receiver and a TE who is talented- rest of the depth chart is completely unknown.

7: Iowa- has talent but mostly unproven- McNutt is a given and deserves his ranking in Jon's article. K. Davis, Herman and CJFed will have to step up to replace 109/1,432/14 Tds. That also doesn't include Adam Robinson's receiving stats.

6: Indiana- return two talented receivers in Belcher and Wilson but lost 130/1387/10 from last season's receiving corps. A proven Td producer and solid TE returns in Ted Bolger along with steady Max Dedmond

5: Purdue- Keith Smith and Justin Siller will join the aforementioned Edison for the Boilermakers. the also return leading pass catcher in TE Adams. Cortez Smith is the only real loss to this unit.

4: PSU- a lot of talent at this position. I am ranking them #4 because several key players are injury prone and they have the weakest QB(s) of the remaining top four teams. Replacing Brackett and Zug- quality third down and gritty players but replacements are more physically talented.

3: Michigan- a lot of bodies for a team that really spread the ball around. No significant losses at this position and legitimately 5 deep headlined by Roundtree and Stonum

2: Northwestern- Physically this may not be the most talented group, but they are very effective. Rashard Lawrence is one of the most physically gifted NW players I have ever seen. Replacing Fields and Stewart who combined for 65/745/2, but return primary targets Ebert and Dunsmore.

1: Michigan State- two key losses (so far, its a long off season in East Lansing), return Cunningham, Martin and Nichol, who adapted very well from QB to WR. Depth at both WR an TE if the TEs can stay out of trouble. Lost Dell and Gannt who combined for 75/1089/9. Martin may be the best player of the bunch and will likely step into Dells role as leading receiver.

I haven't looked at Wisconsin, Illinois or OSU because if we play them this season we will know as much as we need to.
