Best Approach vs. UNT: Ground & Pound or take what they give ya?

Does Iowa put the game in the hands of its most accomplished units (OL and RB) even though UNT will undoubtedly crowd the LOS and run blitz like crazy? Or do they take advantage of the openings that creates in the passing game and put the game in the hands of a young QB and inexperienced receiving core?

There is also the consideration that right now the running game seems to need some work.

What do you think?

Football if you play it smart is a game of situations. If your a balanced team you take what the other team is giving you because they can't take away everything. It's the nature of the game. Now if your up 4 scores at halftime you can afford to run the ball into 8/9 man fronts for no gain 2 or 3 times because it don't matter. But do I care if we pound it or air it out to get up in the first place? No I don't at all.

I think this is incorrect. UNT likely watched the ISU game and saw the deep shots. I am one who thinks that Stanley will be able to correct the over-throws soon. If I were UNT I would be very wary of loading the box due to the fact that stanley hit 9 different recievers last week and had 3 wide open deeps.

Against North Texas I hope we can go out and get whatever we want and it should be the perfect opportunity to get the rushing attack going and specifically Butler and Young.

I think we should just focus on the fundamentals. Blocking, tackling, and execution of the game plan. I hope the defense just runs to the football and makes tackle. The offense should move the ball and score points.

We need to work on what needs working on. I'd like to see JB and our back up rb's get carries; let AW rest. Get our WR's plays. If we're going to burn Coopers scholly, lets get him and B. Smith some targets. Let's get Quarells some targets. We need to see what they can provide. Let's find out now before they are forced to play due to an injury and they maybe aren't ready.

We need to get our backup lb's some reps. let's see what our FR db's can do, if they're burning redshirts.

And not back off if we get up by 30.

Oline needs reps to gel. Run...play action. 200+ on the ground and 250+ in the air. Show a lot of new looks and get 2's reps for rb's, Lbs, and any non redshirting WR and TE's. The dbs and saf 1's need reps at least until mid 4th. The oline and dline need to show some dominance. Would also like to see Weigers get sig reps and throws.

Have a solid complete game Hawks!

Execution is all I care about tomorrow. The D better show up big or next week will be an embarrassment.

Gtounf and pound if you want the risk of another close game against lesser competition snd give them a fair chance.

It's situational. Ground and pound, with executed play action, may be exactly the best way to win handily against certain teams.

And when you need to work on oline continuity, a week before the toughest game of the year, it may make sense against a team like N Texas.

I could be wrong, it happens, but a track meet I think is the only way NT can hang.

The dbs and safeties need to be tested, and we need to test depth at LB, RB, and Oline.

You might be right, but they don't seem to be able to stop anyone. Why give them a chance to do it....

So ground and pound it was...59 carries, 3 backs over 70 yards (and Wadley not one of them)

it was both.

first half was scratch where it tickled. it would have looked better but still shooting themselves in the foot.

second half was "we're tired of their talking so it's ground & pound 'em"
