Best announcer for the big 4

How does Drake fit into this? Big 4? It's like if you wanted to poll the top four sodas, and then gave the options of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and Sam's Choice Cola.

Dolph has his moments but I still miss Ron Gonder calling the games by a long shot over anyone else.

OT: Brad Nessler is far and away my favorite TV announcer for college football.

I don't know much about the other three but Dolph is poor at best as a radio play by play announcer. He doesn't do a very good job of letting the listener know what is going on. I'm sure its not nearly as bad if you are watching the game with the sound muted and listening to Dolph call it on the radio. But if you are just listening to him call the game with no visual, it is pretty poor quality.

I've honestly never heard a more annoying voice/schtick/accent in my life than Rima. It literally makes me want to rip my skin off every time I hear him on promo's on KXNO. I don't think any of the big 4 have anyone special right now for announcers.

In terms of actual play-by-play Rima is the best, but my Iowa homerism wants me to pick Dolphin. Dolphin does have great chemistry with Ed and that makes listening to games a good experience. Rima has passion as well, but sometimes it does seem forced. Rima lived in my hometown and did high school sporting events for KOEL so I remember him from back then.

I will second missing Ron Gonder and I was hoping he was going to be "the guy" when it was decided there would be one network carring Iowa games.

Sometimes I feel spoiled knowing I grew up back in the day where there were multiple broadcasters for Ioa football. All were unique and different in their own way.

Rima turned me off doing his call of that UNI/Kansas upset. The poll linked in the OP didn't list the entire quote...he blatantly ripped off 3 or 4 of the most famous sports calls in history. I'm not really sure why it bothered me as much as it did, but I guess I expected a little more originality.

Agreed. Rima is the worst in the Midwest. Give me the "Boom goes the dynamite" kid over Rima all day.

Rima is the most fun to listen to for me. Not sure I'd say he's the best either tho. I like Dolphin for pre and post game. Not the game itself. As bad as he is at calling games Iowa has the 2 best color guys bar none. Don't need a poll for that one.

Thats the thing I hate most about Dolph's Cap One call. He said "I dont believe what I just saw" about 3 or 4 times.

Some play by play calls that should never be repeated:

"Do you believe in miracles? YES!"

"I dont believe what I just saw"

"And we'll see you....tomorrow night"

Eddie P. is the best I think at color. I can't put anybody above him and can't imagine listening to Iowa games on the radio without hearing his analysis. He was even cool about everything when things were going south last year. Hope he's on their into his 80's.

I've heard from several folks about their dislike for Dolphin. I think he's good. I guess I've not noticed if he's good or bad by listing the score or clock.

I agree 100%. I've always thought if I were a sports announcer, I would probably have a couple lines in my back pocket in case I was ever in that situation. (I know, it's a contrivance, but it's better than re-hashing someone else's line with slightly different inflection - like Dolph tried to do - and end up sounding unoriginal)

The best thing about the "I can't believe what I just saw!" line is that it's a perfect set-up for, "I don't even KNOW what I just saw!"

Rima forced the **** out of that call. It was like he'd written it down on a 3x5 before the game.
