Ben Howland out at UCLA.....The Mayor a Candidate??

Fred has done a great job, imo. The NBA is the only place he'll move to, sooner or later, imo. And he will do well in the league.

I told my kids I would send them to any school in the country except one so my 'Clone-hatin' credentials are solid. I do have to say Hoiberg has done a great job and will have other opportunities. Making all those transfers fit into his program and stay out of trouble is not easy. Royce White was a problem everywhere he has ever been before and after ISU but Hoiberg got an all-world season out of the guy and kept him out of the court system. I hope he gets a better job soon so the Clones can get back to where they belong.

ISU is pretty much where they belong right now.
5th place in a mediocre league, and losing to Iowa.
I would be happy if they stay right where they are at..

Is Fran a candidate too? Both options have about the same probability of happening, which is 0%.

ANY COACH, whether it be Fran or Fred, would be a total fool not to listen to UCLA, if they come calling. It is one of the best jobs in the country.
Any of you guys ever been on campus there?
For the money UCLA can pay, and the opportunity to get out of this icy, crappy s**** weather, I would not blame either guy for bolting.

As hard as it is to admit it... I totally agree with you blubber. Anyone who says differently is simply being biased. You have to put yourself in that position. I'm only a few years younger than Hoiberg, and at this stage of my life if UCLA came calling with the big bucks I would most definitely have to take it into serious consideration. Whether or not I'm happy where I'm at, and even if that place is my alma mater. The only reason someone would turn down UCLA is if they love Iowa so much they don't want to go anywhere else, or can't picture themselves living in a big city. The two places are completely different lifestyle wise. That part may scare some people away.

With that said, I think Shaka Smart would be really stupid to turn this down if it is offered. I would have tremendous respect for his decision to stay, but I just think it would be really stupid. He's done more than enough for VCU.

There's also a ton more pressure to win and win immediately. I mean, they finished the season 25-10, went to the NCAA's and the coach was still fired. Why leave the place where you undoubtable feel the most comfortable, are about to get a nice jump in pay, can essentially do no wrong, already having success, etc. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Its when other schools or leagues, stop showing interest in you coach is when you start to worry. I am guessing ND is not too happy with Brey right now, he gets to the tourney and just fails miserably. I would think Fran would be a candidate, (not that he would take it) and there is nothing wrong with that. Simply means your program is on the right course. (Unless you got guys like Boeheim who are entrenched for 15+ years)

I don't think Fred would leave. He could have a crap season or two in Ames and still be The Mayor and be treated like royalty. If he had crappy seasons at UCLA, he'd be fired and his name would be tarnished. I don't see him as the type to be "in it for the money".

I have a feeling UCLA is tired of losing and all the other drama that was going on under Howland. Yeah, they had a pretty good season this year but had that early exit, to Minisoda. Look for them to go big in their higher. While Smart, Stevens, and Pastner may be hot names, they have yet to prove themselves at the "big time" level. Yeah yeah, Butler is now part of the A10, and Memphis is borderline big time. Would not be surprised to see somebody like Pitino, Calipari, or Self to be in the mix. Conipari has been at UK long enough that the slime trail has got to be getting visible by now so it may be time for him to leave. Louisville is on top, but I imagine UCLA has bigger pockets. LA has got to be looking better than Lawrence right now, or anytime unless you just dislike the lifestyle of LA.

Yes they both went to ISU but Sanderson was from Pennsylvania, Hoiberg grew up in Ames and I think that is a huge difference. Hoiberg has young kids and I'll bet he wants them to grow up in Ames.

So I think the NBA is probably 8+ years away IF he chose to go that route. But my guess is he stays in college and he definitely won't leave for another college program. My guess is his tie to his alma mater is stronger than any NBA tie and increased money also.

Yes. Loved my two years in grad school there. And that was enough - I couldn't wait to get out.

The weather is obviously fantastic, along with In-And-Out Burger. Much of the rest is a disaster: crime, taxes, traffic, housing prices, school systems, phony people, cost of living... Obviously being a rich UCLA b-ball coach lets you mitigate some of that, but if you're not going to Final Fours regularly (Howland took them to THREE), you're out of a job in 2 years.

I think it is really impressive what he has done at VCU but you would be a complete moron to turn this job over down. You would have absolutely everything possible to bring in big name players, and on top of that, players want to play the type of style that Shaka wants to play.

Yes...Michigan really wants them to continue that style also. I hate to say it as this is something I wouldn't want for anyone, but Shaka got outcoached by J...BEELine. He stung him good. You can't play that style against Michigan. At least, when you are down 18 or whatever at halftime, maybe you do something different. Michigan has 4 guys that can handle the rock very well. When you weren't turning them over, you have to hunker down and play in the half court and try to make them continue to make threes from their half court sets. Instead, he kept the forward pressure and either gave up a dunk or a wide open three on the kick outs. That was really stupid. Don't get me wrong, I wanted Michigan to win, but Smart was terrible yesterday. He just couldn't believe Michigan could continue to run essentially a fast break (after the initial pressure), getting 3 on 2 or 4 on 3 breaks the entire afternoon. Burke will make you pay...and he did.

Fred might jump to the NBA someday, but he won't go to another college, no matter the money.

But, of course, he can't coach at all if you listen to those on HN, so I guess ISU is stuck with him. :D

Let's see, Ferd has 3 yrs head coaching experience, throw in a little beginners luck with some misfits and, voila, he is ready for the NBA before you know it!!!

Anyone remember what Greg McDermott said about his coaching gig at UNI?? How long did that last?
1st time somebody waved more money at him, he bolted. His ties to UNI meant nothing. This was just going to ISU.

UCLA is one of the great jobs in college BB. I am sure Fred will stay at ISU but I would bet a lot of money that if UCLA comes a calling, Fred will listen.

The crime is not too bad in the UCLA area. (now that OJ is in prison). The cost of living doesn't matter if you are making triple what you were making before. One of my kids lives in Brentwood, just a few blocks from the UCLA campus. He really likes it out there.

There are really only a handfull of programs that have a realistic chance of final 4's and championships. UCLA is one of them. Coaches are a competitive bunch. Virtually all of them would love a shot at winning it all. As far as pressure?? The person UCLA hires will be set for life. Yes, he will have to perform, but if he doesn't get the job done, he is still a rich man with a UCLA coaching gig on his resume".
