How long will fans be patient and what do fans consider improvement/acceptable improvement.
I know all fans judge success in different terms so there is not really a right answer.
I am not sure when/how I will say Iowa is on the right track. I don’t like to predict after one big win things are changing (ie.. beating Purdue last year). Maybe if Iowa can hold three years of success like three NIT appearances we might be able to look back and have a reference point of when “things†changed.
I am willing to be patient even though it is hard at times since I want things to happen right now. It might take 3-4 years from the start of the 2012-2013 season to say things are looking better and some higher rated recruits outside of Iowa are deciding to commit to playing at Iowa.
I think after looking into Indiana, a team with WAY, WAY more advantages to turn things around quickly than Iowa. I have come to the belief that it might take 4 more years before Iowa can fights for 5th /6th place finish in the Big 10 which will assure a spot in the NCAA tournament.
Sometimes fans (optimistic and pessimistic) don’t realize Iowa might improve but other teams improve as well so improvement does not always mean much better results. It’s not like Iowa is the only team allowed to improve all players/coaches in the Big 10 work hard to improve each year.
Indiana is a good team to look at. They have WAY, WAY more going for them to turn things around quickly compared to Iowa. I think that is a reason Indiana is a good team to look at, since in theory they should be turning things around quicker than Iowa based on obvious advantages (tradition, Indiana population).
Tom Crean hired April 1, 2008.
Eric Gordon declares for NBA draft leaves , DJ White graduates.
two players transfer and three players are kicked off the team (Crean’s decision to do this)
Crean now only has two returning players on campus. One is a walk on and the other is a scholarship player.
Crean re-recruits Tom Pritchard (3 star) and Matt Roth (3 start) both were committed prior to Crean.
Crean recruits two juco players (one 2 star and one 3 star)
Crean recruits 3 players to complete his team all 3 stars (Verdell Jones, Malik Story, Nick Wiliams)
2008-2009 Season is a disaster as you can guess by what I have outlined. 6-25 overall 1-17 Big 10
2009 recruiting
6 players signed: Creek, Elston, Watford, Hulls, Muniru, Capobianco (Creek, Elston, Watford TOP 100)
2009-2010 season is not good 10-21 overall 4-14 Big 10 (Creek only played 12 games Injured)
2010 recruiting:
Look to have only had 2 open scholarships: Sheehey and Oladipo both 3 stars signed
2010-2011 season was not really good. 12-20 overall 3-15 Big 10. Creek once again only plays 18 games due to season ending injury and was not really fully healthy from previous year injury.
2011 recruiting:
3 recruits signed: Zeller (5th best center and 15th best player in nation), Etherington & Abell 3 stars
2011-2012 season: Incomplete 9-0 overall so far¸but who knows how they will do in the Big 10
2012 recruiting: 5 players and some services rank it a top 5 class
Perea (5 star… 7th best at position and 16th best overall)
Ferrell (5 start…4th best at position and 17th best overall)
Hollowell (4 star.. 11th best at position and 48th best overall)
Jurkin (3 star)
Patterson (3 star)
Indiana still is not really back (I say this because they need to show me a way better Big 10 record than they have been putting up lately) but you can see how long It taks a storied program to rebuild so we will probably have to be very patient with Iowa to say the least.
