Beathard is not a leader

Did anyone see some of the pass blocking too? There were multiple plays where one or both of our tackles were shoved all the way back into CJ? We had OLineman standing around while the pocket collapsed in seconds.

CJ has not been great this year but how could anyone be with this joke of an offense and pathetic OLine? All this crap about teaching 'great technique' when football is about speed, athleticism and toughness.

I saw a bunch of o-linemen get literally put on their ass last night. I can't remember which 20 3rd and short LD got stuffed on, but one in particular every o-lineman got put on their backside except Welsh.

Ya I agree, CJ has been beaten down and lost his mojo this season. I also don't think he's as good as we all had hoped. Every time the kid calls a run audible at the line the play goes no where. Almost just want to see what the original play was most times.

He's definitely lost something from last year. maybe ts injury, maybe it's coaching, or a combo of both.

Slow decisions to tuck and run and what seems to be worse pocket presence.

I would like to think CJB is more this guy than what we are seeing now.

CJB isn't the problem. But after decades of a failing public school system, only a few Hawkeyes are smart enough to recognize this truth.

Tate
Stanzi
Vandy
Rudock
CJB

Amazing there are still people who can't identify the pattern. Must be a ton of Hawkeyes on this board who just started following the team last year. Posers.

Stanzi had a very good Sr year by really cutting down on his whopping number of INTs his junior year. Stanzi was also making better reads his Sr year. Everyone thinks 2010 is on Stanzi when in fact the Adam Robinson injury and Wegher gone hurt the running game compared to 2009, a big injury to the right guard and to two linebackers really hurt, and the fake punt and other stupid coaching in 2010 hurt.

Stanzi played great and he had some great receivers to chuck it to.

The exception proves the rule.

Learn the game.

CJ and Davis might be served well to take 5 mins to watch this again... I can't put my finger on what's different about CJ than last yr but it's more than just the personel.

Sampson cut his hair.

While it's possible CJ is playing a little scared of being injured again he has been thrown around like a rag doll all season. Let's mot forget the Ferentz factor. He doesn't allow qb's to be leaders, he wants to be the leader.

The last 3 QBs struggled in their last year at Iowa. Stanzi could be in that as well (maybe not). Let's not forget the impact of a stacked box as well as predictability on offense. Actually if one goes back to before Stanzi that is 5 of 6 leaving here struggling. Throw in the Pick Rick Six portion of Stanzi...

1. Terrible recruiting?
2. Terrible coaching?
3. Injuries?
4. Predictability?

Go back further and think how much QB success was on the coach or guts of the player. Banks tried to drop bank but relied on instincts. DT was simply who he was. Chandler and McCann were probably the closest to what KF wanted and they were at best mediocre/decent.

So that leaves Banks, Tate, Stanzi, and CJ 2015 as his better QBs. CJ 2015 was a rebel in that year. DT was a rebel. Banks was a bit like my Border Collie. She behaves under no temptation, but when the temptation is there she just can't help it. When Banks saw things open to run he was gone. What was KF going to say.

I do think he has injuries including a knee. I do think he took incredible hits even when winning early in 2016.
For some reason the rebel is gone. Tate was successful when Iowa was shorthanded, but they weren't 12-0 either.

What KF wants and what he wins with may be in conflict.

I agree CJ isn't the sole problem as he doesn't have a lot of time to find a receiver and the guys are having trouble getting open. Some of the problem is the play calling and some of it is on CJ,he's struggled at times to make a good throw.Just like everyone else wish he could be the CJ throwing the ball like last year.

CJ isn't the problem. Last year he was the key in making something out of nothing. Way too little credit last year. He took a lot for the team. This year too much blame.

That draw play he ran before the field goal may have been his best play of the year. Think about it....I'm being serious.

Stanzi had a great statistical senior year, but I'd take Junior year Stanzi every day of the week and twice on Saturdays. INT? Big deal! Pick 6? So what? 5 INTs in one game? Who cares...we got Ricky and he will lead us back. And he did...EVERY. DAMN. TIME! That mojo was missing his senior year. His stats and efficiency were better because he cut down on the mistakes...because he was afraid to make mistakes. He lost his edge. Right, Cougar?

Now CJB has lost his too, and with it goes the offense.

Why can't there be more people like Shem . . . and fewer Nancy Pelosi's??

Yep. He needs to stop worrying and learn to love the bomb.

Do you think consistent pass blocking would help him? I'm not sure because it's been so rare that he's had it. Seriously...we can't pass protect at all. The other thing that may be hurting him is that our receivers are not very good. We have a midget as our leading receiver. He's an occasional slot receiver any other year...and he's our number one. Smith, at this point in his career is terrible. On the pick that CJ threw against Michigan late...that ball was in the air forever and Smith couldn't adjust to at least make sure it wasn't picked. It's like they give up if it's not right to them...you have to fight for everything in the air. I know he fell down...ok, how do you fall down on your own? Does he wear a helmet when he's not playing football, in case he just falls down. I think we should check...cause something's wrong if you can't make adjustments to a deep ball. That to me is crazy. Falconer...drop. Smith...drop. McCarren...drop. I remember we used to say, anything that hits a hand should be caught. These guys have a circle of error that if it's not right at them...its an adventure. CJ gets a pass this year for me.

It's true, the offense around him is "challenged". But it's also true he's been off most of the year. The long pass to Smith you mentioned should have been thrown a couple seconds earlier. Multiple passes every game are off target. When he does run he's so obviously tentative it's ridiculous. But then, "obviously tentative" is the hallmark of a returning senior qb under KF.
