Be prepared to hear...

Good points by all. It really depends on how far down the list Lickliter was.

If he was in the Tier A list of coaches, then it's not settling. If he was down in Tier C, then it's settling. However, I do remember Barta saying in his presser that he targeted Lickliter. Whatever that means.

I see your point too spank. NCOTY is nothing to shake a stick at and we are all seeing in 20/20 hindsight right now...

Come on Spank, you know better than this, of course GB wasn't going to say well I couldn't get Pearl so I settled for TL.

better question is how is it settling if you only offered 1 coach. Barta himself said they only offered 1 guy and he accepted.

I think we did settle. Coach of the Year provided pretty good cover. As it turns out, I don't think the due diligence was very good. I'd put it this way: If I were the AD, an introvert like Lickliter would never have been considered for what the Iowa job needed at the time, and still needs today.

The people who keep pointing to the COY award as a validation for all that Lickliter is are taking the easy way out to avoid dealing with the harsh reality we've observed over the last three years.

That's apparent now, but it wasn't at the time - which is the point stormin is trying to make. There is no way that anyone could have seen this (and I mean everything that has happened over the last three years) coming.

If someone had said that 10 players would transfer out and that Iowa would have its worst season in history in Lickliters first season, you'd have told them that they were crazy.

Because you don't extend offers to guys you know will say no and make you look bad. Who knows how many people GB asked if they would be interested in the Iowa job before he got to TL.

TL did get a COY award, but that doesn't really matter. It is a nice award but we all no that post season awards don't mean squat because the wrong people usually get them. He won a lot of game in a bad conference, if his team was in a major conference he wouldn't have gotten that award. So COY has no relevance to me in who we hire.

George Raveling won the same award. Did anyone ever consider him a "great coach"? He was a great recruiter and had some decent seasons. But I wouldn't look at his NCOY award and have that influence my assessment of his overall coaching abilities.

Lick just seemed like the opposite choice. Find the guy that seemed the most opposite of Alford. And having that COY award really helped seal the deal.

The NCOY award is not a direct ticket to the Hall of Fame. It's just something that's voted on for one season. You shouldn't let it influence your hiring decisions.
