I hate this often used statement but I'm gonna use it now: Ferentz is who he is.
Understand Ferentz and all his, IMO, coaching foibles and then begin to make a judgement on his coaching ability.
Ferentz is an, IMO, painfully conservative football coach. He demands control of all areas of the football team.
Stop passing Ferentz's foibles onto undeserving others.
This is one reason why Ferentz's coaching ability has been so 'muddied'. This is one reason why, for some, it's so difficult to get a fair and honest read on Ferentz's coaching ability.
For example, lots of posters like to pass judgement on KOK. Posters, you should realize Ferentz is the one who drives Iowa's offense - Ferentz makes the decisions for Iowa's offense. For example, it was Ferentz who said Iowa needed to get McCall on the field. Likewise, it was Ferentz who said it was time to get McCall off the field. It's Ferentz who wants a ball control running offense. It's Ferentz who wants the offense to take time off the clock. It's Ferentz who runs out the clock at the end of halves -who waits for overtime - even though timeouts remain, when, at least for this year, Iowa needs to score as many points as possible to win. It's Ferentz's conservative offense that can't recruit athletic ball players. It's Ferentz who wants punt returners to let the punt drop - who doesn't use 'more worthy' athletes to return punts.
Along these same lines, things can also be said for Iowa's defense. Ferentz runs Iowa's defense. The defense is the most important part of Ferentz's scheme. With Ferentz, Iowa wins with its defense.
Lots of posters adore Parker when actually it's Ferentz's total football scheme that may deserve the adoration.
Now, a real problem for Iowa's defense is it becoming ineffective and outdated. Ferentz can pile on with points to beat this year's Northwestern, but you just know he hates to do it.
I'm going to try to assess Ferentz on his coaching abilities. I'll try to stop 'scapgoating' others on Ferentz's staff.
