Basketball Scrimmage vs. K-State

So I guess the hawks traveled to Omaha today to play K-State in a closed scrimmage. Last year Iowa apparently lost by single digits to Creighton, I wonder how this Iowa team plays against a good K-State team. Looking at KSU it seems they lost their top 2 scores from last year. One to the draft and another to transfer. Still this is a team that went 27-8 last year and is just outside the preseason top 25 like us so its great that we get to scrimmage a team of this caliber.

yes, would be interesting to watch it. IIRC though, Fran isn't supposed to say anything about it, but he can hint like he did last year.

I expect ksu to be pretty bad this year. They lost everything that made that team go. No idea where any scoring comes from.

They lost mcgruder, southwell, and henriquez as well as Rodriguez to xfer. That's essentially their 4 best players. They are talking about will spradling as the best player on the team. He's a poor man's stauskas, nice player but bad omen if he is your guy.

My brother in law is a D1 official and I am fairly certain he reffed it. I will send him a text to see if he can give me any details. I prefer not be called deep throat! Wait a minute.....maybe I do? Anyway I will report back! And not I am not going to tell you who he is, because he will most likely ref Iowa games this year and I don't want the heat of a bad call. I give him enough shiz as is!

Pictures or it didn't happen.

Ok, as you know, refs are sworn to secrecy in these types of close scrimmages:). But I may have gleaned some info from a little birdie who may or may not have knowledge of the scrimmage? The following information may or may not be the exact words from my birdie. You may chose to believe my info or not, as it may be real or in fact completely made up. You be the judge:

HAWKS are better. I do not think the point guard is good enough. The tall red headed wing player is very good. They are 8 deep. MARBLE has ball and everyone stands around a lot. Big center is good enough. Kstate beat them in man to man periods but hawks dominated the zone periods. Can the point guard play? Can they rebound the ball? With their schedule they can get to 20 wins. Them and Iowa State are very similar. Uni a notch behind this year but not next. I think Iowa is 4-6th in Big 10. They do play hard for sure. Pressure will bother them but new rules on freedom of movement will help them. Pretty athletic team I think. FRAN is great, tough. But maybe one scorer short against good teams. Certainly improved. Need great health. They do have a measure of toughness it seemed. Kstate cannot score the ball in my view....but I'm wrong a lot. Iowa better coached than
kstate for sure.

This would be the thing that most concerns me out of anything said here (some nuggets weren't exactly glowing recommendations). Marble is a very good player, but (at least to this point), he's not the guy who will take over a game single-handedly. We can't have the offense stagnating when he has the ball.

I'd take the Marble/guys standing around concern with a grain of salt... this was the first time they played against another D1 team since the NIT. They have a few new guys in the rotation and are probably trying out new things/are rusty. Some current flaws can be mitigated by strategy and repetition in practice. Not that guys standing around when Marble has the ball is something new.

Keep in mind my birdie has been and always will be more critical of the Hawks. Knowing what I know it is a pretty solid review. Many of us had concerns about players standing around when Marble had the ball last year. Hopefully that changes as we move into the season. I think Iowa will rebound well with size and athleticism. I think they will be fine at pg, with Marble, Gessel and Clemmons. I like the toughness comment, I think that showed up last year. White was a standout, that is great news. Seems as though Woodbury has shown improvement. Hawks dominated in zone periods. I hope this meant solid outside shooting and good perimeter pressure on D?

I hope Fran scratches where it itches. The team lacks some lateral quickness, especially if we are playing White/Uthoff/McCabe at the 3 spot. What the team does have is length, so while I'm not necessarily a huge zone defense guy, this team may be better suited for the zone. They can run the press and drop back into the zone, and with the length they possess, they can close out on shooter, all the while having an inside presence (Woody, Gabe) if teams drive in the lane.

Hoiberg was on Andy katz's show today and they talked about the new hand checking rule and he thought it would result in a lot more teams playing zone. Big fan of iowa playing zone with marble at the top and uthoff on the wing.
