Basabe playing hurt

Coach Fran mentioned in his postgame interview that Basabe has been trying to play with a groin injury. Worse this week - missed practice. Tough to run & jump with a groin injury - explains his performance. Nice 9 day break should benefit Basabe (groin), Cartright (hamstring), and the rest of the team. Fran will get a chance to do some teaching too. I expect we'll finish the season strong! GO HAWKS!!

Never crossed my mind that he could be injured. That would explain a lot. Still think he needs motivation at times, but the injury makes sense.

Well at least we have an explanation now. We all know hes better than what he has shown in the last few games. And you are right hopefully this break will be just what the Dr ordered.

my bad i thought he`s being streetballer instead of real basketball player. im sorry for saying something like this

A groin injury affects everything that Melsahn brings to the table...running the floor, rebounding, put-backs,shot-blocking, and dunking. No explosion off the floor with a bad groin....get better big fella!

If the case that would make sense. It also sucks because that means that the two players we could probably least afford to have injuries going into the year have both been hurt and playing through injuries.

Luckily, we've had guys like Marble (who actually man have been assisted by BC's injury) and White step it up. Hopefully as the years accumulate we'll get some more depth to combat injuries.

Agree totally 20. Think about the roll this team has kinda been on. They win a few and really compete in the ones they don't, aside from MSU and OSU. Think what they could do IF BC and MB were 100%. Like you said, maybe this layoff will get them up to par, and this team can make a run. Schedule sure favors that. Go Hawks!!!!!

Ummm ok. I'm assuming this happened in the Michigan game since it is the first we've heard of it?

Iowa-Purdue post-game blog: McCabe, Basabe going in opposite ...

As for Basabe, it was another low in a roller-coaster season that resembles his team’s inconsistency. He picked up two fouls in the first 3:20 of the game and sat the rest of the half.
His third foul came at the 17:50 mark of the second half, and when he picked up his fourth foul with 13:24 to play, McCaffery had seen enough.
McCaffery, though, took part of the blame.
“He never got it going,â€￾ McCaffery said. “The mistake I made was not getting him back (earlier in the game) when he had (two fouls). When he sits for 15 minutes, he can’t get going again.â€￾

I'm not saying he didn't say it but I haven't seen it in print anywhere. If it was that big of a deal you would think he would mention it or sit him because of it.

I think Fran has to cover for him some....

Mel came with Fran to Iowa and I think Fran obviously sticks up for his players. Mel might be a bit banged up but he really seems to struggle at playing through things. I think it's just something mentally that is on Mel to fix.

I think last year as long as Mel stayed out of foul trouble he had more chances to play through things as Fran did not really have other options. This year with McCabe stepping up and Aaron White around it's easier to take Mel out.

I know Mel picked up his 4th foul setting a pick 30 feet from the hoop and Fran was chewing him out when Mel was going to the bench. It was just a stupid foul, you can't stick out your hip and pick up a dumb foul.

Mel just seems to make some bad decisions that get him in trouble.

I think when Mel picks up his bball IQ and learns to play through things he will be fine. He just needs to realize what he does well and max that out.

I agree to a point I'm just a little tired of the excuses. First he put on too much weight(the coach's fault) and now he has this mystery groin injury that he fails to mention in the quote I posted but again Fran blames himself for not putting him back in. I went to the Michigan game and watched the team in warm ups and all through the game from close to their bench. Never saw anything that would indicate he was hurt.

I heard Fran say that Melsahn has a groin injury and was limited in practice on the postgame show with Bobby and Dolph.

Now, maybe they want to keep it under wraps a bit for strategic purpose,I do not know. But Fran said it.
If you have ever had a groin injury, once you sit down and cool off, it is hard to really get loose again. I suspect that is why Fran second-guessed letting him sit so long in the first half. Lets hope it gets better this off week.

yes that is correct, he said it about two thirds of the way through his post game radio show not his post game press conference.

I thought about that too after I posted. I don't know I just want the dude to start helping the team. We all know he can.
