Basabe and Marble

I have my opinion on this topic, but I want to hear others opinions as well...

Both Basabe and Marble seem to have an issue with showing up on time. This is a huge concern in my opinion and shows a lack of respect for their team mates and the team as a whole. In addition, on a day when the team is hosting two potential recruits that everyone should want to impress, we have two incoming freshman showing up late. First, why did they play at all in the scrimmage and why weren't they running laps while everyone else played the game or at least sitting on the bench the entire time?

I would not be commenting if this was the first or even the second time that this had happened, but it has happened several time since the beginning of the summer. During PTL, I attributed it to both being dependent upon someone for a ride (Yes, I was giving them the benefit of the doubt), but this excuse does not hold water at Carver. Fran has a hard enough task ahead of him without having his own players working against him.

Now, there may be a very logical reason for their being late (Although from the reaction that one poster stated they recieved from Cully this is not likely). I am also very hopeful that both will be an important components in turning the program around, but they had better get their priorities straight or as far as I am concerned they both can go back east.

Comments/thoughts/information that might shed a light on this issue????
 
This is the first time I have heard they were having problems showing up on time. If true it is very concerning. I have found this to be a concern with many of America's youth. The majority of young folks live in a world where Email is considered slow, and every minute of their time is treated as such... THEIR time. They think that a 9 am appointment is a suggested time and arrive at 9:10 because they believe there time is so valuable that other people should be catering to them.
What do you think a coach like Bobby Knight or John Wooden would have done if a player showed up late for practice?

1st of all this was not a practice as that would be a violation of NCAA rules prohibiting practicing as a team before Oct. 15th. I believe this was technically a pick up game organized by the team captains and players themselves. As to them being late, yeah that is not good and hopefully the rest of the players on the team make sure they know that so next week and going forward they are on time.
 
they might know how crowded it is on football saturdays. It also is not a practice as those can not start until sometime in Oct.

Yeah, everyone knows that a student athlete's off-season time is owed to anonymous message boards. Troubling. They had better shape up or I'll start a new thread.
 
While few if anybody knows the story on this, I would assume if the there are team meetings set by the coaching staff, and anything post Oct 15, they will be on time. If not, the staff will help them get in fine physical condition later for the up tempo game Fran runs.
 
I chalk this up to young players, new on campus and to the university atmosphere, still adapting to a new team environment. These are not official scrimmages or practices and as another poster mentioned, if the start time is 9 a lot of young people will view that as walking through the door at 9 or a few minutes later -- no big deal.

I would expect that the upper classmen will let them know the importance of the Saturday scrimmages and what is expected, and help speed B & M's maturation process (although I wonder whether as a result of the mess left by Lickliter and the previous player departures the young players know right now who the team leaders are.) Once practices begin officially, I doubt Fran will tolerate tardiness.
 
I give them some leeway because they most likely do not have any transportation there still while all the other guys do. Also what was the stuff about Payne saying something?
 
I hope everyone will let this "lateness" go. It gets mentioned on the boards and now everyone is jumping on them about their "issue" with being late all the time. A rumor perpetuated by the internet. And so what if they were late. Fran will take care of things if it really is a problem but for we fans to go so excited about it is way out there. Again we fans do not know all the facts. This was the first fb game and maybe they didn't anticipate the line at breakfast, the crowds and how it would effect transportation that day. Maybe the alarm clock didn't go off right, maybe.......... A lot of reasons to be late, and few to really jump all over these guys.
 
I will start to be concerned when they are late for an actual practice,game or class.
Much ado about nothing.

Who knows why they were late, but let's say they were just purposely late. We aren't in a position to play hard ball with some of our players. It's sad, but that is how it is right now.
 
No excuse for being late. However this is 1% off all the things the kids do. They show up on time to class, weighlifting, individuals, etc. They need to show up on time to this, also but to make it seem like there is a big problem with little information is why meesageboards can be awful.
 
I know we like to assume that these kids are immediate professionals, but think back to your own first week with everyone on campus your frosh year. They are a mere 18 yrs old,and are just now experiencing their real full-time college reality. Being a few minutes late on a Big Ten saturday 7:30 am pickup game is no even close to a red flag. When you have evidence of Tucker type behavior,ie.downtown at the bars passing out in the alley...call me. BTW...I was in that alley my first weekend in college.

If they are late to team meetings, study sessions, workout, practice, et al... then it's something to be concerned about.

Until then, nothing to see here.
 
If Fran can't deal with a couple of newbies showing up for practice late this
will be a very long season. I dont think thats the case.
