Basabe and Cartwright

White and McCabe were huge, but Cartwright had 11 assists (career high) and only 2 to's and Basabe, despite being under the weather, came up big when we struggled to score in the second half.

I didn't envision a scenario where we win with Gatens being held in check.

Totally agree, Basabe was HUGE, and Cartwright was a very steady presence. Hit a shot or two, and took a few other good shots, which kept lanes open for Basabe/McCabe/White, along with Marble being able to get free in space.

When Basabe/White/McCabe can combine for 50+, Gatens isn't "needed" for his offense. But Gatens DID hit that big 3-ball in first half.

I'm starting to think this team goes as Cartwright goes. I believe Iowa beat Indiana without him, but for the most part, seems he needs to play well for Iowa to beat good teams.

Marble progressed this year, but Cartwright is the one point guard on this roster. In my opinion, Marble doesn't see the court in the same way. Cartwright isn't without flaws, but Iowa is much better team when he is on the floor and setting up teammates. I am not sure so sure Iowa doesn't win 3 more games and put itself on the NCAA bubble if he is healthy all year.

agreed the pace of the game is so much faster and flows better when he is running the point. when he was bloody and marble was at the point it really seemed like the offense was slow and not running and just out of sync. i was worried we wouldnt regain the momentum after it but bc got us going fast with the passes ahead and alley oops. great job by bc.

While I agree with most of this, the distinction needs to be made. When "good" Cartwright is there, we are much better with him at the point. When"bad"/injured Cartwright is what we have (and that was the case for large portions of the season), we were much better with Marble at the top.

Like I said, the team goes as Cartwright goes.

@Swirlin-- I agree on Cartwright. It's too bad he has been hampered by injuries and maybe a loss of confidence throughout the season. Marble stepped up in the void, but he isn't a natural PG and that has become more evident throughout the big ten season. Marble doesn't have the short burst quickness required to get a step on a smaller, quicker guard and his handles, while good for a guy his size, aren't PG handles.

Cartwright managed the game from start to finish and made great decisions, despite facing pressure from some quick defenders. Nobody could check Dillard, so I am not putting that on him. I watched Dillard hit 3 after 3 after 3 in warmups and expected him to have a big night....season almost 45% from 3.

excellent post! Give Fran and the coaches credit because Baasbe and Cartwright have been very inconsistent this year but picked a great time to play their best game of the season! Lets hope Baasbe has matured and is ready to step up and dominate for his last two years. He has so much upside it is scary
