They could start October 3 and play 8 conference games, and still have the bye in there. I'd presuming it would be too hard to make it a 9 game season, without byes, due to scheduling issues, not because the players couldn't do it. That way they could start "off season" training in August, season training in September, and be ready to start on the first Saturday in October.
The interesting and potentially very funny aspect of the conference only type of season is that what happens to Notre Dame?
How great would it be if the P5 conferences got together and said, we're playing conference games only starting on this date followed by the conference championship weekend?

They could play BYU 8 times. Or, maybe Army 8 times.
