Barta is "Thrilled" With the Way Recruiting is Going: Raise Coming?

If supporting a program that is on the cusp of it's 4th 20 win season in a row, made the NCAA tournament last season and is ranked in the top 25 of most preseason polls makes me the problem with Iowa Athletics, then I'm guilty.

Hutton had a Wisconsin offer
Wagner had offers from Minnesota and Maryland and an SEC football offer
Fleming had offers from FL, Memphis, Nebraska, UNLV and Auburn
Moss had Auburn and Iowa State(?)

All 4 guys had better offers, so keep telling us how bad this class is and how they are mid major players.

You're right, I'm not in management, but maybe I should be and hopefully you're not. Most management would be thrilled with what Fran has done in a short time with the Iowa basketball program. Most management would reward their employees for doing a better job with what they have then what was expected (if you go off class rankings right?). Most management can look at where things were to where things are.... he probably deserves any raise he gets.

Being thrilled with the 11th ranked class in the Big 10 is, in fact, thumbs down worthy. If you are thrilled with guys with mid major offers, how would you be reacting if we had the 3rd ranked class in the Big 10?

Unfortunately, you are what is wrong with Iowa athletics. Fans being thrilled with mediocrity. Being thrilled just to play in a bowl game. Being thrilled with an NIT run that nets us 20 wins.

Try setting your standards a little higher. Our athletic budget is one of the highest in the country. Our coaches are some of the highest paid in the country. Our facilities are well above average. If you are thrilled with below average recruiting classes and not even being the top team in the state of Iowa, you probably are not in management of any kind.

Who?

Flemming had offers from UNLV, Nebby, Memphis & Florida

Hutton had an offer to Wisky

Moss had offers from Auburn, Iowa State

Wagner had offers to Minnesota, Texas Tech

iowa isn't going to land the number 3 recruiting class at this time. Fran has been targeting many top players but it just hasn't happened yet. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being excited about this class Fran brought in.

Are you trolling? An ISU fan? Just become a fan of Iowa athletics a year or two ago? The bball program was in the absolute gutter of the B1G 4 years ago. Fran came in, and now the team is set to compete for a spot in the NCAA tournament for a 2nd straight year.

Absolutely, Ingoodcompany, outstanding job by Fran after the Lick disaster. Most of my Long time Hawkeye alumni rabid fans stopped watching during the Lick years. It was a daunting project to get back on track and he is doing it well.....

Love his Applebys Commercial with the special Franwich.....

Barta is a troll and needs to be canned. Coaches should expect extensions and massive raises when they actually do something to improve the brand. Fran needs to make the tournament this year with a tougher schedule and win 1 and then I will believe. But it is better than watching Lick-ball.

Don't get bogged down with Fran getting a raise and equating it to the results we've seen in football. First and foremost, it is kfootall's buyout that is the killer and not necessarily the salary, itself. If Fran's contract doesn't include the same type of buyout, then he's earned a raise. Plus, he needs to always have at least 5 years left on a contract for recruiting.

That's how Bowlsby got rid of Fry. He made sure that Hayden had only a one year contract for several years. The Hawks couldn't recruit; every competing school could say "Look at the head coach... he probably won't be there when you graduate, much less next year!" and we lost out on a number of recruits. No recruits = bad teams on the field = goodbye Hayden. That's why the cupboard was so bare when Kirk was hired.

These guys won't finish eleventh place in the conference.

His salary looks pretty good compared to other coaches around the nation. A lot of good/great coaches have salaries less than 2 million. Jim Boeheim and Roy Williams among them. To think that Frans salary is in their neighborhood is pretty crazy.

LOL. UNC has his base at $325k. And supplemental income of up to $1.8m. Roy gets paid by a lot of other companies. Reported Nike and Learfield sports earnings are over $500k each. ESPN said UNC added an adjusted $330K to his over $2.1 current salary. No one will every know what Roy makes other than maybe his wife and accountant.

This thread from two weeks ago is even more timely now. Since that time, Fran managed to sign his contract extension, has landed no additional recruits to go with his 11th ranked recruiting class in the Big 10, and has lost to both in-state schools by over 20 points. Barta has the golden touch. Seriously, who gives raises and extensions at the BEGINNING of a season...especially when that season is following the most epic meltdown last year that saw a team go from a top 10 ranking, to not even making it to the legit 64 team NCAA field in a matter of weeks? If Barta were in charge in Fergeson, MO, he would give the entire police force a huge raise.

That's not what I picture him doing there. I picture him handing out flammables and telling people that's what he does for a living......destroys and burns down to the ground.

I understand what you're saying. To me, the recruits he is bringing in and our record should be the minimum expectation at Iowa really, and why he gets paid 1.8mil. How many of us get a big raise and extension just for doing our job as expected? If he brings in blue chips and takes this program to sweet sixteens etc. I completely understand rewarding him for going above and beyond the starting point of expectations.
If anything, the assistants deserve the raise. They spend a tremendous amount of time on the road away from their families.

If we paid them more cash, we would have better recruits.....

Basic Math....

It sounds like Fran already negotiated a raise two years ago and is in the works on negotiating another big raise at this moment. Is that really needed? Are other schools knocking on his door? Unlikely.

I am as glad as anyone that the team has been improving from the laughing stock it was under Lick, but did we not lose 7 of our last 8 games? Were we not the 67th team selected for the NCAA tourney last year, which is our VERY best season under Fran? Most importantly, isn't this year's recruiting class of four guys ranked 11th in the Big 10, while last year's was ranked 12th in the Big 10? Improvement is nice, but is it really necessary to dole out huge raises any time a coach's team shows a pulse?

Barta employed this raise system under Ferentz. Ferentz cashed in and exploited it more than any coach in modern college football history. Let's not make the same mistake with Fran, as he still has yet to win a single NCAA tournament game going into his 5th year at Iowa. He also has yet to reel in a single blue chip recruit from outside the state of Iowa.

Here's an idea...isn't a multi million dollar long-term contract through 2019 a reward in and of itself? Why don't we reserve raises for sweet 16 appearances and Big 10 championships? Do we forget that Fran's salary already jumped by 10x when he got a promotion of a lifetime to leave Sienna for Iowa. Let's have a CEO with a little bit of common sense in the salary department for a change.

Fix it for you, buddy.
