Barta: Iowa-ISU Series Faces Roadblocks with 9 Game League Schedules

If home games are the issue, and the Big 10 does a 2 year cycle of 5 home games, then 2 years of 4 home games, why not do that with the Cyclones? 2 years in Ames and 2 years in Iowa City. Open with what Iowa hopes to be a patsy, play the Clones and then some other competitive BCS conference team and voila... schedule solved. I think what will happen though is most teams are going to go 2 patsies and OOC rivalry/tv ratings moneymaker at a neutral site for what you could almost call an in season bowl game.

Here is the thing...How many BCS schools would want to admit that there primary rival is the clowns. Imagine walking around and telling your friends..."Hey, our big rivalry game is coming up this weekend...Iowa State."

Yea, I can see a lot of schools wanting to develop THAT rivalry. It will turn into one nasty football game to see who finishes on top of one another near the bottom of the Big 12.

Even if the schedules do "sync up", I'm in the camp of not wanting this to continue every year. I'd like to see maybe 2 out of every 4 or 6 type of deal where each school could still go out and find other home and home options.

As for rivals, I agree that ISU would be losing out. But, with Nebraska leaving I can see the Missouri, KState, and Kansas games becoming more important on both sides which may eventually turn into a rivalry. Also, I don't expect the Big12 to stay at 10 teams very long so who knows what happens when more teams come along.

This is what I was thinking in regards to B12 rivals. MO, KSU, KU and ISU will all find more importance in their meetings and spawn new rivalries. It's the revenue generated with playing NE and Iowa, however, that likely will not be replaced.

I actually agree with this. With a nine game schedule we will most likely be looking at one FCS cupcake, one MAC/CUSA/Sunbelt cupcake, and then hopefully a team from another BCS conference. Go ahead and play ISU a couple of series in a decade but leave that space open for other BCS teams. I enjoy watching Iowa go up against other BCS conference teams.

This.

Time to flush this series. I say let's go to a every now and then agreement with the ISU game. It's a no win for the Hawks and for ISU it's becoming an albatross. It's been real but it's time to pull the plug on this one gang. I give it no more than 3 more games, maybe four depending on the B10 schedule.

I would say if the series ends and these two teams no longer play each other...we will all regret the ending of the rivalry within a few years. I remember the 70's when we didn't play, and the excitement of the series starting up again. It will be a real shame for both programs, and the state, to see the series die out once again. The series has been tightly contested over the past dozen years...as it was in the late 70's/early 80's...but if it must end, then so be it. I, for one, will miss the fun and intensity...for both schools...of the intra-state battle.

Same here...good riddance. Plus, what a riot, they would have NO rival whatsoever to play. Their make believe rivals would be gone. They think they have a rivalry with NE, which NE laughs at because a team has to win games to have a rivalry and one win every now and then doesn't qualify, especially when that win was because the other team fumbled the ball 9 times.

And Iowa's true rivalries are Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan St, Northwestern, and probably now will also include Nebraska big time. So the clowns fall to about 7th on Iowa's list of a rivalry but are number 1 for the clowns. So without Iowa, the clowns have absolutely no rivalry because they have no one in their conference to call a rival...no one.

So we NEED to drop them just so THEY have NO annual rivalry game to play. THEY NEED Iowa...we don't need them whatsoever and in fact are better off not playing them.

haha wow somebody hates them some Iowa State...

Seriously though, I cant for the life of me comprehend why Iowa would want to cancel this series...Iowa leads the all time record with a large margin and with the exception of 2002, I dont believe ISU has ever beaten an Iowa team that should have destroyed them. Playing a Big 12(-2) team still helps Iowa even if it is Iowa State. SOS is amplified even if Iowa State just does mediocre the remainder of the season.
The Iowa-ISU rivalry is one of only 3 like it in the nation (Two BCS teams, one state, Different conferences) I would hate to see that end.

Iowa has wanted out of this series for a long time now. This will give them the excuse they needed. I think it will be long gone... and Jon Miller will be giddy.

We need to dump this series. For our 3 nonconference games (when we go to 9 Big 10 games) schedule two creampuffs (both at home) and one good BCS school from the east or south (home and away).

Odd, the comments from Barta would seem to indicate otherwise.

Did you read the article?

Idc one way or another because ISU did gouge us....BUT it does either need to go to every couple years or go away...In todays age with a 9 game conference slate...that leaves you with a real patsy, a directional school, and a BCS caliber test game before the conference. If we keep ISU they are taking the spot of that BCS caliber team...say good bye to playing games in areas we recruit such as Pittsburgh or Syracuse out east, etc. This series needs to either be revamped or go.

About the only reason to keep the game is to keep all the money instate. Its does nothing for Iowa nationally. ISU is a bottom feeder in the Little 12, Iowa is a contender in the Big 10.
Play it every other year or every 5th year along with UNI.
