Barta: Solution to ‘Orange Krush’? Get better, fill arena | GazetteOnline.com

People need to stop comparing Lickliter's situation to Ferentz's situation, which by the way only took 3 years to see success. Comparing football to basketball rebuilding is not a equal comparison - it takes 22 players to create a football team...FIVE for a basketball team.

Barta should be comparing Lick to other coaches hired the same year, in same situations and in the same sport.

How many times has a "100% behind Coach X" turned around to be a pink slip a month later?

Awesome, can we get rid of them both in a package deal? The thing is that this whole mess needs to be blown up again which is just going to prolong the time in the basement. When Barta says he got riled up, well that is how I feel every time I get to Carver and see the talent disparity between Iowa and its opponent.

After SA ended that 07 season at 19-14(9-7) Barta issued an ultimatum that he needed to make the tourny the next year...SA bailed. Barta had been here a year.
Now, in his 4th year as AD, he has a bb coaching hire who is 36-51(13-35) and he is issuing votes of confidence ....I know it was probably boosters on his arse in 07,and evidently boosters are laying off Lick now, but still...the contrast is amazing. SA won 23 games vs Big Ten teams in his last two years...lick will probably come in at about 14 or 15 in 3 seasons...and Barta is expressing confidence? Hmmmmm....guess it also comes down to who hired who.

Barta is quoted as saying he asked the ticket manager how it (Illini fan onslaught) happened.

Gary, if you need to ask that question, my spidey sense that you're in over your head may be accurate after all.

"It" happened because you hired Todd Lickliter.

Kirk Ferentz went 1-10 in his first year. He said one of these days we'll have a good team, it just won't be in September.

His second year, he went 3-9. If memory serves, Iowa was 12 points away from winning 7 games.

His third year he made a Bowl Game.

His fourth year, he had his daily allowance of vitamin c.

I think most people by the end of year 2, felt like they were fielding a competitive team.

Then why do college teams have 70+ players, and NFL teams 53?

Barta said in 2006 and ‘07, he received tons of e-mail on Iowa’s coordinators Norm Parker (defense) and Ken O’Keefe (offense). All of it was negative, asking for them to be fired.

To begin with, that criticism was minuscule compared to the current basketball situation. Ferentz and his staff had already proven themselves and had prior success to back them up. Lickliter and his staff have no prior success to prove themselves they could better the current situation. In fact this staff is regressing (record wise). So once again Barta is attempting to spin the truth.

After reading the full item, I honestly wonder if Barta actually believes some of the BS that he spews about what a great coach Lickliter is.

I was pointing out how many it takes to support a starting team in those sports. Point was you need much more to create a competitive team in football than basketball.

But would you agree that any football team only carrying 22 players would be in a bit of tough spot if there were any injuries or transfers?

Barta said Todd had a long history of coaching great basketball. I'll give him the entire Butler head coaching experience, but does six years make a long history?

The fact that he is making public statements defending his coach is not very good news for Lickliter IMO. I believe he made similar comments at the end of the Alford era.

Having to express to the media that you are behind your coach is the kiss of death.

I think that the boosters have to be going nuts, and I have never seen CHA so empty. Iowa atheletics is very healthy thanks to the Big Ten Network, but you have to wonder how much longer the department can keep employing a man who is clearly underperforming at his job.

Actually, he more or less told Alf to **** or get off the pot. Alf pinched it off and got the **** out of dodge.
