What is asked of a punter these days is much different than 50 years ago (or even 20 years). The loosening of the rules re: punt formation have opened up so much more strategery in the punting game. Way more directional stuff, a mixture of rugby/line-drive/sky balls, sometimes quick, sometimes holding it as long as possible. Back in the day they just snapped it back there and kicked it as high and far as they could.
