Ballard or Binns at DE?

I know binns didn't play last week because of suspension but will he play/start this week? I was impressed with Daniels and IMO, the best 4 DL are Ballard, Daniels, Klug and AC.

I guess what I am really asking is will Ballard play DE or DT this week? or both?

Binns will take his customary spot at DE, Ballard will move back inside. When Daniels gets in the game, it will probably be at DT.

I agree Ballard had a great game at DE, however Binns is a freak of nature with arms that can swat down any ball. I think against the clowns Binns needs to be in there to disrupt Arnaud's throwing lanes.

From my understanding Ballard will go back inside and Daniels will back him up and Ballard will also spell Binns at DE, meaning we will see a couple of different looks with very high calibur players out there.

This, I thought KF said when Daniels rotates in that Ballard moves outside to give Binns a rest and also Daniels could come in and Ballard or Klug out to give those guys a rest.

I know ISU doesn't huddle and rotating these guys could be hard but anyone of the 3 can sit out a series and Iowa won't miss a beat. So you may see them rotate series (play 2 sit 1) like KF did last year with Robinson and Wegher at RB and like what we will probably see with Robinson and Hampton.

I've heard the coaches are planning to play Binns at DE and Ballard at DT for most of the game, but may swap the two on obvious running downs. They also seem to be eager to get Daniels on the field wherever and whenever they can, so he should see a good amount of PT during rotation.

Binns was a freak last year and he can't return soon enough. Tazclone- Binns without question is in the top 4. No doubt about it. Listen Iowa's DL is rated as one of the Top DL in the country and it's primarily because of the 2-DE Binns and Clayborn. I can't wait to see him step onto the field.

Thanks guys. So how would you ranks iowa's DL best player to worst (they are all good) in regards to each other? I guess I would have gone AC> Klug=Ballard> Binns. Do I have Ballard and Binns mixed up? I guess I was impressed with Ballard last year and saw that the coaches voted Ballard honorable mention but not Binns. Especially with Ballards production from the inside 9 TFL and 5.5 sacks (almost the same as Binns). I know he moved inside last year from the DE position so was just wondering.

Again guys thanks for the info and opinions

Binns and Daniels bring different attributes to the table. They both are definitely battling for the #4 spot.

Being #4 on Iowa's DL is better than the #1 for most programs though.

Anyhow, I wouldn't undersell Binns ... despite his poor judgement earlier this summer. A primary knock on Binns last year was that he could get pushed around on the edge some against the run. However, you also have to remember that he was just a SO last season. Now that he's a JR, his technique is now that much more refined and he's also developed physically. He's now bigger and stronger ... just as you'd expect of an upperclassmen who's been working for so long under Doyle's direction. Furthermore, Binns has great natural leverage and his wing-span is impressive. Both those factors help him a lot ... especially against the pass.

Of course, I wouldn't undersell Daniels either. He was slated to start last year until Ballard decided to move to the interior. While the progress made by Binns was a big reason why Ballard moved to the inside, another reason was because we were lacking size and experience on the interior. Ballard was able to give us a HUGE dose of both when he moved over to DT. Now that Daniels is bigger, stronger, and more experienced ... he's more prepared to take on a bigger role.

The staff does say that they consider Daniels a starter though. I absolutely love the depth and options we have. I think they're pretty high on LeBron Daniel, too. It'll be interesting to see how much PT he gets.

  1. Agree being fourth is better than being #1. Heck I would take iowa's 5th best DL on ISU.
  2. I thought Ballard was better against the run at DE which got me wondering if he would push Binns back out or if they might rotate on obvious passing/runnning downs.
  3. I was very impressed watching Daniels last week even thought it was eiu. I was thinking to myself, "how do they keep him off the field."
Just thinking out loud and figured you guys watched more last year than I did so I would get you guy's opinions

Here is how I'd rank 'em:

1a. Clayborn - I'm looking forward to seeing him get better at beating double teams
1b. Klug - just a hair below Clayborn ... he gets knocked by pundits because he's not huge size-wise
2. Ballard - the dude actually has the potential to be up with the other two ... I kinda wish we could have afforded to redshirt him)
3a. Binns - just a hair above Daniels. His natural leverage and wingspan kinda sets him apart and gives him a natural advantage.
3b. Daniels - really, really strong guy. Plays REALLY low. Has a tremendous attitude and work-ethic.

If you go back and watch Daniels in 2008, he played a good bit then spelling King. I thought that he was even pretty impressive then ... and he was just an undersized RS FR.

Part of what makes Ballard better against the run is that he can set the edge all by himself. It's awful hard for an OL to move him and give their RB the edge to work with. He, himself, also benefits from a year of experience at the DE spot too.

The knock on Ballard is that when he goes after the passer, he has so much momentum that it can be hard for him to change direction. He's always needed to be a bit more disciplined in his pass rush. The good news though is that when he was a SO he seemed to be a step slow when it came to getting to the QB. Now it looks like he's GAINED that step back. The question now is if he can make sure he positions himself better on the rush. I guess that's part of the reason why I like him a bit better at DT. It's easier for him to just collapse the pocket from the inside. What is a QB going to do ... run to Clayborn?

I expect Binns to have a monster year. Much like AC last year. He will be making the same decision as AC....stay or go pro. You will see Binns in the NFL as a high pick either next year or year after. mark it down

It's really going to depend on the kind of year he has. I hope it's a break out one, of course. I'm going to predict he's not leaving after this year for the NFL though. At least I really hope he doesn't, but if he does that means he has a monster year which I'm all for.

Our DL is sick. It's interesting that Daniels and Daniel were the ones to get the sacks last week.

I wouldn't be surprised if in obvious run situations Binns comes out for Daniels OR Ballard shifts to the outside and Daniels comes in at DT.

What I was more struck by is that Iowa's D-linemen were having success defending against some of EIU's screen-passing game. When you can defend against the run AND the screen game with pretty much ONLY 4 guys ... AND still force the QB to get rid of the ball quickly ... that is a job well done.

I know this is a far off projection, but who do you see as possible starters on defense next year.

thanks

GO HAWKS!
