Really? Alvarez was rebuffed by Al Golden and Chris Petersen? In Alvarez's very first public interview he said that he assumed that Petersen was "locked in at Boise State and doubted that he'd leave but that he'd consider talking to him." Sources also said that Alvarez's contacts down in Miami (they are extensive as Donna Shalala was the Chancellor that brought Alvarez into Madison and she then took the same job in Miami. The most recent miami AD also started under Alvarez) told him that Golden would not be a good fit so Alvarez didn't even interview him.
So where exactly was Alvarez turned down by anyone?!! 99.9% of the information out there was total speculation. At one point in time I heard that Brad Childress was being highly considered. That was NEVER going to happen. This played out exactly how Alvarez said it would. He said he was going to take his time, he did that. He said not to panic and he said that he wouldn't. He said that he doesn't use search firms, that search firms use him. It played out how he said it would.
