Iowa's defense on the perimeter has been very poor these 2 games in Orlando. Better get it figured out soon.
 
Let's hope we can rebound from some tournament losses the way we did last year. As I recall we had some early season defensive troubles and then got it dialed in.
 
Uggghhhhhh, Hawks lose again.

I wanted to see Iowa face Wichita St. Oddly enough, it's going to happen. Just not in the championship game.

Perimeter???????? That post position defense in the last six minutes was atrocious.

Fran has got his work cut out for him before the B1G conference starts up. If we don't make significant improvements we will be lucky to finish in the conference below where our recent recruiting class has been placed in the B1G.

This is very disappointing if you go back to when the seniors were recruited and you looked at their star ranking. Then you throw Uthoff on top of that as a transfer. This was suppose to be one of those years when they would all shine together. Wow!!!

i am not throwing in the towel just yet as the season is very young. We will see what kind of white magic Fran can come up with.
 
I thought we actually looked better in this tournament than we did in the Coaches vs. Cancer one last year, and we went on to win 12 games in the B10 last year. From an RPI standpoint, we got a good draw, Dayton and ND are solid teams and Wichita St will be a good win by the end of the year. We led late against both Dayton and ND, we played the vast majority of the Dayton game without our starting pg. Woody had a real solid tournament, our bench really needs to improve but I think someone will step up before we get into conference play.

What the hell is going on with our zone defensive to keep allowing wide open corner 3 looks? Both Dayton and ND were getting that shot whenever they wanted.

People that think Olesani was a better defender than Woody, don't have a great grasp of basketball. He blocked a lot of shots but he also got out of position a lot chasing those blocks and struggled at getting back after hedging screens, though he improved on that a lot over the course of the year.
 
For the most part the defense was mostly what I thought it'd be in the Dayton game that I saw and rewatched. There seemed to be a lot of players checking out defensively at the 3/4 positions sans Baer. Granted I saw most of this in the first couple of games as well, but I figured I might see a more dialed in effort with a rise in competition. I didn't see any reason why we can't be good defensively, but we need players willing to fight from the positions I mentioned (I think Fran knows this and played Baer down the stretch against Dayton and a lot in this tournament).

I saw a couple of things from the Dayton game that I actually wanted to see, so I feel pretty good about this team honestly.

I also thought we looked good considering all of the new players in the rotation. And I agree 100% with your RPI comment. The Selection Committee much prefers losses to good teams over wins against bad teams. I'm not worried about the bench. It was good for all of the newcomers to see high level competition early. They can use the next month to get better.

my original post was regarding the first 2 games only in Orlando.

iowa rotates so much on defense, some guys were being left wide open for 3's.

only meant that they have to clean those things up.

i like this team. There are a lot of young guys getting playing time and there will be some growing pains early on.

love coach mccaffrey. Very pleased he's at Iowa.

Gabe couldn't hedge as well but he could block shots and rebound. Two things he did better and is...a part of defense. He clogged up the middle.

When a large part of Fran's defense has longer athletes to make it more difficult for opponents to take shots, there isn't that much defense. It's NBA defense.

IMO, this has been a problem for every Fran team at Iowa. Defense. Go back to the first years of Devin. I would equate Iowa's defense to the XII's defense in football.

If Iowa has an off shooting night, will Fran's defense keep Iowa in games? NO.
