Backup QB - Will it be Weigers?

Anyone who thinks Ryan Boyle's "frame" is better suited for B1G hits than Drew Clark has either 1) No clue 2) has never seen Drew Cook.

The person (Deanvogs) who said neither of these guys had seen any competition...? Once again, clueless. Regina routinely beat teams a class or 2 above them during Drew's time there. The only team to beat them (in OT 29 - 28 or something like that) in the last 4 years was Solon ... who won either the 2A or 3A state championship. Ryan Boyle was probably the single most dominant player in Iowa H.S. football the last 2 years. Did Deanvogs not witness him tear Xavier a new one in the championship game 2 years ago? That game was over by halftime and it was all Boyle. Ditto this year. They lost a game early to crosstown rival Valley. Beat the crap out of everyone else, (including Waukee who has a bunch of kids moving on to play Devision 1 football next year) (oh - and beat them twice) and it was all Boyle, all the time.

Just an unbelievable comment, Deanvogs.

Even if these guys were playing against the best high school players in Iowa on a weekly basis, their competition wouldn't match up with the competition QBs face when they come from a metro area around the country.

I disagree with you in this case. Not so much because I disagree with what you're saying. I guess it's just more circumstantial in my opinion. I agree that very few freshman see playing time. However, I was highly unimpressed with Weigers in WDM. Quite honestly the thought of him possibly playing made me quiver. He couldn't handle the Center/QB exchange, he took what would have been a bunch of sacks in a real game (not all his fault of course), and he threw quite a few questionable balls. It was ugly all around.

I guess the way I'm looking at it is if CJ goes down then you're going to be taking a chance on a guy no matter what. Yes, Weigers is obviously going to have an advantage with his knowledge of the offense, but if he still isn't executing it well then that doesn't really matter. I think Boyle brings a lot more to the table athletically and he should be able to make things happen that Weigers won't be able to do. Plus as a true freshman Boyle is already 6'2 220. That article I linked in the first post says he will already have the QB bench press record at Iowa as soon as he steps on campus (and he beat it by a lot). Physically he is ready to play this level of football. My gut says they might be better off giving Boyle a slimmed down version of the playbook that is catered to his style and let him roll with it. If you're going to be rolling the dice on someone you might as well go with the guy who can make things the most difficult on a defense.

You are basing this all on one open practice that you saw. By all accounts his day in IC was much, much better and he look pretty good. I think you are basing wayyyyy to much on his one practice, and I would guess if you watch Boyle go up against the #1's and #2's his first week in camp in August, you would know why he will be RS along with Cook.

You need to leave the state and watch some high school football if you think 2A and 3A Iowa high school football is "tough" competition.

First of all, I made it clear in a post after the one you quoted that I fully understand I was only watching one practice. I hope he's not consistently practicing that poorly. If he is then they are in a lot of trouble.

Second of all, comparing Boyle's first week of camp in his true freshman season to Weigers spring practice as a RS Freshman isn't even fair. Of course it will take Boyle and Cook both some time to adjust. I don't want anything to happen to CJ, but let's say that it does early on in the season. Well then obviously Weigers would probably be the guy. However, if it happens further down the road when these incoming freshman have had a little more time to adjust you never know.

In an ideal world Weigers will be ready to step in when or if he is needed. Chances are at some point he will be, and I'm well aware he's the most likely backup. If he proves that he deserves it then that's the best case scenario because I think it would be beneficial for both Boyle and Cook to RS. However, if Iowa is actually having a decent season, CJ goes down, and Weigers looks like he's in over his head then I hope Ferentz doesn't hesitate to see what one of these younger guys can do.

Well, I believe competition is relative. If you think the only good H.S. football is played by schools whose size would make them 5A, 6A, 7A or higher, then you are selling Iowa high school football short. If Division 1 football programs only recruited from those massive schools, they would miss out on a lot of great talent. If we went back to the beginning of the Hayden Fry era, I would be interested to see the split of Hawks who were drafted into the NFL that came out of little schools vs those that came from really large schools. I bet the little schools win. But wait! they can't be any good, because they didn't have very good competition, right?

I think any 1A team playing a 3A team is, in fact, tough competition. Especially if it is a very good 3A football team. Xavier was in the finals against Dowling in 2013 in class 4A. They dropped down a class and were one of the best teams in 3A last year. They made it to the Dome and lost in the semi-final to eventual champion Pella. So, that is a good team from what I consider to be a "big school." (I graduated with 82 other kids, so that is my perspective).

Regina played AT Xavier last year and beat them 21 -7. I think there were a lot of 3A and 4A schools that didn't/wouldn't want to play "tiny little Regina" because they would get their *** whipped, and they know it.

Ryan Boyle could have gone to any high school of Dowling's size in this whole country and he still would have been the starting QB. I think he proves it over the next 4 years.

Having said that, neither of these guys are the best player in this recruiting class. I believe Jake Newborg is that guy. Daniels may have something to say about that before his 4 years are done, but I think Newborg is the most dominant player at any position in this recruiting class.
(But how can that be? He plays for Tiny West Lyon) yeah - tell that to LeVar or Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Go watch high school football in Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, California, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, etc.........and come back and tell me the CR Xavier's of the world is tough competition. Im not saying there arent some good players that come from the state, there are, but it is an absolutely different level of football being played in those other states. There is a TON of talent on those teams that dont even see the field that would be super stars in Iowa high school football. Also FWIW, I think Boyle is a stud and is the real deal.

Cook will never be qb at Iowa, he will most certainly switch to TE. Boyle is the real deal but I hope to god he redshirts this year to develop. Weigers has the tools to be a very good qb in the B1G so Boyle has his work cut out for him if hes going to pass him on the depth chart.

I think you're confusing good teams with random good players here and there.

Boyle is going to have to be quite a bit better than Weigers from the first practice to the last practice of the fall if he wants the #2 QB spot. That is what you are saying COULD happen, so how isn't if "fair" to say Boyle has to be better from day 1? You don't just get #2 Reps in the middle of a football season, you need to earn that in the spring and summer before the season.

I just don't see it, and I don't think it is really even in the realm of possibility. HS kids come on campus all the time talking about "gunning for the starting spot"......Didn't Simonek do that a couple years ago, and then left when he realized he was buried behind Rudock, CJ, and Weigers? Very few FR can come in as true FR and play the QB spot, even the elite guys need a year usually of RS to even be ready to play in their RS FR year.....and those are the elite who become 1st rd draft picks.
