Primarily on the offensive side of the ball. Sure GD is awful, but the personnel that Iowa has this year is much better than last year and the statistics show it from Sat. We all saw the first half, primarily the 2nd quarter when things got clicking and that is what this team is capable of. They will get better/more consistent and they will go bowling!!

For some perspective. Iowa had 302 yards in the first half on Sat. Here are there GAME totals from last year

NIU: 268
ISU: 304
UNI: 429
CMU: 430
Minn: 374
MSU: 257 in 2 OTs
PSU: 209
NW: 336
Ind: 345
Purdue: 264
Michigan: 309
Nebraska: 200

Iowa only broke 300 yards 7 times, and 400 yards against CMU and an FCS school.

Curious, did they run any inside cross block plays/counters on Saturday? I don't remember.

I think most of us would agree. This team looks like it's going to be much better than last year.

What has everyone's panties in a bunch... is that the coaching appears every bit as bad so far

Devil's Advocate:

1) NIU defense lost a lot from last year and wasn't as good.

2) Offense still only accounted for 20 points on Saturday. Only 1 pt. better than last year's average. (Although I'm not sure how many defense scores contributed to that average.)

3) Secondary was shredded again.

Kirksey had a pair of pick 6's; I don't think we had any other defensive scores, off the top of my head.

2 weeks after the game last year, NIU gave up 500 yards to a terrible Army team. They weren't world beaters last year irregardless of what Podalak says.

True, but they were moving a few other times where correctable errors occured. Not all 3 and outs like last year

3) Secondary was shredded again.

True, but Lomax and Lowery have the ability. Just need to put it to work.

I still think we are better than last year based on the eye test. I just don't want to get too sucked in again.

The team is better. Film review will show stupid mistakes caused Iowa to fail to matriculate the ball in 2nd half. #Fixable#

Boat,

It is clear to me from watching their first game Iowa is better then last year, at least from a talent level, save for the DB's. There is a certain safety I'd just soon not see on the field although we all know we will. With that said, unfortunately the same coaching philosophies and most of the same coaches are in place. They, not the players as a whole, are a big concern for this fan.

Of course talent can at times overcome very average coaching. My hope is that will be the case this year.

For more perspective in 2011 we had 10 games with over 300 total yards. 5 of which were over 400.

I agree. I think this team has the talent to win 8 or 9 games this year, but the coaching will turn it into 6 or 7.

All I truly know is that I hope the offense in the 2nd half of the game was an aberration... not the offense from the 1st half.

So if you only win 4 games and then they dont fire you. You should only have to win more than that? Yes this team is better. However last years team was better than 3 or 4 teams that beat them. Now Iowa has lost to one team this year that they have more talent than.....as far as players not coaches.

Iowa was more talented than 4 wins last year. I think they may be more talent than 7 wins this year. Will they get 7 wins?

I don't get this ledge talk. After our 7th straight loss, im not depressed im MAD at the corpse of Kirk Ferentz's coaching career for lingering as long as it has and stinking up Iowa City.
