Back-handed compliment from a gopher fan

I guess I would take this as a positive overall.
Direct quote from gopherhole fan boards:
It is what it is, Iowa City is a fabulous college town. The student section is hostile, the pre-game lots are a sight to see, the Hawkeye Express is really cool, Iowa City is the Green Bay of the Big Ten. I have to admit I suspect that many of the fans never attended a class beyond junior high, let alone on campus- more of what I would expect to see if I went to a NASCAR race. I couldn't believe all the beer cans, bottles, empty cardboard laying all over the ground, and even saw someone urinating in the open in a lot. But it was wild and I can see why they get 4 Star kids from out of state to go to school there. I was especially impressed with the campus and Iowa City.

You can either have a fanbase entirely made of alums that is very small (NW, MN, IU), or you can have tavern hawks and have a big fanbase (OSU, UM, UW). I know which one I'd prefer.

I saw that as well....I really like the part of attending class past junior high....Cause MN is so high class? I mean, they have those huge cities and all....like 2 of them right? I know that twin and 2 are the same, thats 9th grade crap right there!

Hmmmmmmm... I take offense at ANYTHING that compares us to NASCAR, the "Honey Boo Boo" of sports! (Auto racing is NOT a sport, its bored car guys with no REAL jobs...) Iowa City is wonderful during game day, the fans are the best. Beer cans and bottles??? Oh NO!!! I am SHOCKED!!! The Goofers WISH they had fans like ours...

I think it also helps to actually have a fan base that supports their program. Don't think they're quite there yet.

MN doesn't have the benefit of many Alums that give a crap about their team. All that trash left after games is actually a benefit to many non profits like West booster club. The UI pays good money to these organizations to cleanup after the games. It's a big money maker for those organizations.

Oh great, so he went in thinking it would be some red-neck, red state hell hole, but instead it is a left-wing utopia complete with rampant immorality such as boozing and nudity. To top it off, the entire thing is a front for some big government handout.

Sounds like a jealous Gopher fan who experienced a real college football environment. He can make his comments, but deep down he wishes Minnesota football game day was every bit what it's like in Iowa City.

I didn't really take it that way. I think he was very impressed with Iowa City. He knows their game day experience cannot compete with ours. So the only way he can feel good about himself is to call our fans uneducated.
I mean, in Minnypopolis, Judge Smails and Muffy get together after the game for a glass of chablis while attending the metroplitan ballet.
At least that's how they see themselves. Culturally superior to Iowegians.

I read through about 5 threads over there and they all seem to have a good time in IC.

This was my impression. I was glad that Hawk fans treated them with respect. Clearly, having each team win once in awhile keeps the rivalry more civil....Iowa fans were very nervous,so not shooting off their mouths at gopher fans, which is good to hear.

Iowa has great fan support, and great gameday atmosphere, and we should not take it for granted.
