Back from practice, a few thoughts

Hampton is ready to play, as mentioned previously he has a little mean streak in him ad it showed today. A few times we had some extra talking/hitting a tad late. You can tell he wants to play football now.

D. Johnson looked very impressive carrying the ball. It will be interesting to see if he has a role this season as things play out but i really liked what i saw out of him today. Good looking back.

Castillo had a sweet pick 6....Hyde covered like glue today and is really impressing me. JB at safety seems very likely in 2011. Lowe also looked good out there....our DBs have the be the deepest we have ever had at Iowa, not even close. As far as safety...Sash did have a nice pop on Cheaney across the middle today.

We clearly have a battle at center. I did not see anything separate the two today and both played well. the most impressive thing from the oline today was the pass protection, the blitz was picked up well! Loved that!

AC is well AC. Got a nice cheer and he blocked the kick and ran with it the other way---of course i missed half of this play, lol.

Wienke---MUCH IMPROVED. Loved what i saw out of him today. Threw some nice balls! Derby struggled early but seemed to settle in a tad. He appeared to hold the ball too long a few times however. He looked like a fresh, as expected. JV and RS...what we expected to see.

Reisner had a a nice day as did CJ....i like what we have at TE this season. As reported, CJ is a beast.

Lebron Daniel and Carl Davis stood out to me today. Davis is a large large man. Wow! Daniel looks like he could be special at DE in a few.

I liked what i saw from our WRs today...especially the blocking downfield. McNutt was locked up (couldnt tell who) on one play and just finished nicely. Nordmann will play, i dont know how or where but that dude has talent! Also liked what PC showed today, nice day for Paul.

Lastly we still do not have a kicker that sticks out of the two....well three.

Overall great day!

Great ... Thanks for the information. Did not get a chance to make it over to Iowa City today. I was very glad to read your comment about the Oline ...

I wasn't there today ... but from everything I've gathered, it sounds like the level of competition at C is VERY HIGH. Boffeli is a stud too! Plenty to be excited about in the Hawkeye Nation!

Thanks mucho for the word. I'm very excited to hear the word about Daniel and Carl Davis. While spud has said before that Nardo has surprised him AND Bigach has earned some past praise ... it's EXCEPTIONALLY cool if we can go 7 or 8 deep on the DL. That would imply that more guys could get quality reps in 2010 ... and that would really help us going into 2011.

One other thing....GREAT crowd today. 15k maybe?? Was hard to tell as i was pretty low in the stands but a great turnout.

Thanks iahawk20. Always good to get a fans perspective.

Due to my poor extended weekend out of state vacation selection with the kids I was unable to attend the scrimmage (I assumed kids weekend would be on the 21st or 22nd. So much for assumptions  ).

Hopefully other fans will post their obsevations of the scrimmage for a more complete picture of the day.

Thanks again. :)

I like how you brought up Carl Davis... I've been pretty intrigued by him because of his size. I could see him having a major role in the next couple years if he works.

These updates are great. Maybe I'm just excited for the season and the good news, but I am really happy with how comprehensive this is. Haha, even if the acronyms took me a half second longer.

Kirk's words were encouraging on Wagher-- that he personally he couldn't see him not coming back. And then when asked about the redshirt, he didn't seem to think it should go that far. I've heard rumors on campus, but I'm glad the media is staying out of this. He is a person first and a football player second. Glad Kirk is giving him his space (classy to the core).

I'm also loving that DeAndre Johnson is looking good, s well as Carl Davis and Daniel. Looks like the droppoff on the DL next year won't be as severe as most people expected. After Kroul and King left, I wouldn't have anticipated they would have retooled that well. Gives me faith on the Offensive Line.

iahawk20 summed it all up excellent. It was nice to be back inside Kinnick, we have a very good/deep team, going to be fun to watch!

Before the summer (but after he committed), Carl said in an interview that the coaches told him that he could earn a shot to see early action at DT as a TR FR.

Also, Ballard is rooming with Carl Davis and it sounds like he's doing a pretty good job of mentoring the young man. If Carl can continue to make strides and if he takes care of his academics ... he has a legit chance to make some early noise for us on the DL.

Agree with your assessment of BW3 however if the rumors are true I see him taking a red shirt which makes Kirk even classier... I just don't know how to buy into the coach speak. Seems like BW3 won't be with the team this year and that sucks for us b/c we need him however, he's a man first. RB 2nd.

GREAT post, ia'20! :) Really helps build the anticipation & excitement to read reports like this. Color me pretty jealous that you were @ practice! :p

Just got back from IC not too long ago. The main thing that stuck out to me was the quiet confidence of the O and D. You could sense that they are both very comfortable.

The person that stuck out to me the most was CJF (86). He could easily pass for a college senior, physically and he moves well and has a great set of hands. Nothing that I saw concerned me about his ability to block. He's so big all he'll have to do is stand in front of someone and put his arms out.

McNutt is bigger, faster, and stronger than last year. He could bring some magic to the table this year.

Derby was very shaky off the bat. I have no doubt that he can play QB, but he sure does have the build and athleticism to play other positions.

Saw AC's mom after the game. She looked hot (temperature wise) and comfortable in IC as the mom of the king of IC. AC was just a beast today. Appeared as if he could do anything he wanted.

Davis and Jewel looked as if they could be as good as they decide to be this year.

That's it off the top of my head. I may post more later after looking over some notes I jotted down.

Thanks homer- great to hear. I had heard something like that as well from talking to a few people but couldn't confirm any direct "source" of the info.
