note: I adjusted Steele's numbers for 2 lost Defensive starters at Neb (Michael Rose and Aaron Curry), 2 Offensive players at NW (Venric Mark & Christian Jones) and 1 at OSU (Braxton Miller).

Nebraska also lost 2 new Defensive starters.

The problem with this approach to prognostication is that it ignores players who may have played a lot but were not listed as 'starters'.

Also having 18 returning starters for a crappy team, means you have 18 players back who played bad football collectively...

I don't understand how Wisconsin can be so highly ranked this preseason when they return so few starters. One of the only good things they have going for them is that they return their QB, Kicker and Punter.

Wisky also lost a large senior class too like 25-30 letter winners . Lots of depth

Letterwinners lost :

IU 24 LW lost (11 off, 12 def, 1 ST)
MD 18 (8, 8, 2)
UM 21 (12,7,2)
MSU
21 (9,11,1)
OSU

I think Nebraska will be interesting to watch their season progress, especially if things don't bounce the right way for them in non-conf.

STARTERS RETURNING (O/D): 5*/6 (2 of them have since been lost, Rose injured, Curry transfer)
LETTERMAN RETURNING: 46 (23,20,3)
LETTERMAN LOST: 30 (14,15,1)

For example, they have an early season tough road test @ Fresno State (11-2 in 2013) who only graduated 16 players. However, two of them were QB and WR, drafted in 2nd rd. Offsetting that is a Duke graduate SR transfer who started 3 games for the Blue Devils and played a Wildcat role when not starting at QB (Duke won 10 games). His stats at Duke: Connette completed 90 of 145 passes (62%) for 1,212 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He also rushed 101 times for 337 yards and 14 touchdowns. Fresno also returns a WR that caught 79 balls for 1011 yrd and 13 TDs. Fresno returns a pair of RBs that combined for 1453 yds, 13 Tds, plus 74 rec for 463 yrd...the City of Fresno loves their Bulldog football too so expect an amped up crowd.

The Huskers also host Miami, FL in September. So it's not hard to imagine Nebraska starting 2-2 if the ball bounces poorly for them. IF that happens, Pelini is under huge pressure and Husker Nation is going nuts and the wheels could come off for an inexperienced team replacing so many pieces. They play @MSU, @NW, @Wisc, @Iowa.

I personally don't expect them to start 2-2 as I see them beating Miami in Lincoln. Fresno St has a crazy high octane offense though coupled with an inexperienced Husker D could mean a shootout. Offsetting that is Neb has a top flight DL, still their secondary is going to be tested all day long...

IU WR Caleb Cornett suspended from all activities following a fight downtown at 3am. Already on probation for OWI. Was expected to get significant PT.

Gopher LT Ben Lauer (FR All-American) out with high ankle sprain suffered this week. RT Ben Pirsig returns after sitting out last week with groin injury.

More Gopher injury news:
Wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky and defensive end Michael Amaefula have both been hobbled of late, but coaches say they still think both could be ready for the opener.
* Tight end Duke Anyanwu tore his ACL the first weekend of practice, and that was a tough blow because Anyanwu would have been one of the first replacements for Maxx Williams.
* Offensive lineman Jared Weyler also tore an ACL during camp, but he's a true freshman who likely would have redshirted anyway.
* The Gophers continue to take it slow with offensive lineman Jon Christenson, who is making his way back from last November's broken leg. They hope left
tackle Ben Lauer (high ankle sprain) is ready to practice at full-speed Sunday

OC Matt Limegrover and WR Drew Wolitarsky held out of practice today Aug 21. Status uncertain for opener.

Nebraska

DT Michael Williams carted off field Aug 18 with ankle injury was in boot yesterday (Wed) on bike at practice. Missed 2013 with knee injury. He had unseated Aaron Curry, who announced his transfer earlier this week. Pelini asked OL Jerald Foster (FR) to moved to DT.

LB Michael Rose out for season with knee injury Aug 8
DB Charles Jackson lost to knee injury Aug 8
OL Corey Whitaker out for year with torn ACL Aug 15
S Leroy Alexander suspended for season Aug 8
RB Adam Taylor broken ankle

Junior fullback Andy Janovich and junior right tackle Zach Sterup, who missed practice Saturday, are 50-50 for the season opener, but neither is thought to be long term injury.

DE Randy Gregory had orthoscopic knee surgery this week and will miss Saturday's game.

Randy Gregory wasn't suited up for Tuesday's practice. No surprise. Right tackle Zach Sterup returned, as coach Bo Pelini indicated he would. Other guys on the injury watch this week: Brandon Reilly, Sam Burtch and Kevin Williams

LB Vince Biegel (concussion Aug 13) and LB Michael Trotter (hammy) have been out with injuries, but are participating and may be ready for opener.

Wisconsin will be without starting defensive lineman Warren Herring and fullback Derek Watt for at least the next month.

Herring, who injured his right knee on the final play of the third quarter against LSU, underwent surgery Wednesday and is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Watt injured his right foot against LSU. The earliest he is expected to return is the first week in November.

RB Melvin Gordon hip flexor

QB Joel Stave out indefinitely

defensive end Konrad Zagzebski was limited in practice Tuesday and Wednesday but is expected to play Saturday against Western Illinois.
