B1G Shift: Who Benefits from OSU's 'Demise'?

I agree that OSU always has bounce-back potential with the talent in their state.
And this year, they probably will still win the Leaders. I just think that when the real sanctions do hit, they could be relatively weaker, which will probably bring them back to the pack a bit.
I did not like the non-geographical split of the divisions, but I have no issues with the naming of the divisions....east/west did not make any sense anymore, and I do think the Leaders/Legends monikers have far more marketing potential than Blue/Gray or Lakes/Plains..ect.
I am always surprised at how some fans really get exercised about the logo and the division names...who really cares?
For those who are struggling:
Leaders: OSU,Wis.,PSU,IU,PU,Ill.
Legends: Iowa,Minn,Mich.MSU,NW,Neb.
If that is too much to remember, just use this...Iowa and the M & N schools are Legends, the rest are Leaders. One little thing I do like,Iowa is always listed first as they go alphabetical....right where we belong.

I have to admit, I'm a little ashamed to be a Big Ten fan right now. If Ohio State is cheating at this level, is it correct to assume that numerous other Big Ten schools are cheating in this way as well? If you cut through all the noise, what is really happening is that Ohio State and its boosters have created elaborate ways to compensate their best players and recruits.
I would hate to think that this is going on everywhere, especially at DoNU, but I am not naive enough to think that some sort of underhanded dealings are not going on with every major player. At what level, I am not sure.

You can't tell me that the Ohio State athletic department didn't know what was going on.
100% agree

First, you have to look at the teams in their division. Penn State could benefit, but they have the Joe Paterno problem; as long as Paterno remains their coach, they have some recruiting hurdles to overcome and they just aren't consistent. They have the historical advantages, but at some point having a living legend as your head coach is also an obstacle.

Purdue is still a ways off...Indiana is starting over...Illinois is led by The Zooker.

That leaves Wisconsin. They have averaged nearly 10 wins per year over the past seven years. They don't have the recruiting advantages of an Ohio State or a Penn State, but they have been answering the bell more often than not and as much as it pains me to say this, they have lived up to expectations more than they have not in the past six or seven years.

If they can keep recruiting at a Top 25 level and keep implementing their power style effectively on offense, this is a program that could really benefit from Ohio State's impending dip.

In the Legends Division, Michigan is the team that I believe will benefit most from Ohio State's impending dip...first in head to head games, as The Vest owned the Wolverines with nine wins. But Michigan has always placed an emphasis in recruiting Ohio, and this could give them a boost in that regard. Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini is from Ohio and you know he is going to spend more time in his home state recruiting for the Huskers. Iowa has picked off a few Buckeye State gems over the years and may be able to do the same, but the water is going to be full of sharks.

The old saying goes something like 'nature abhors a vacuum'; nature does not like unfilled spaces and typically finds a way to fill them.

That will be the case in Big Ten football over the next five or so years; the Buckeyes are going to take a dip and some program is going to step in and fill that vacuum...the question worth watching is who will it be?
I think you pretty much hit it spot on, with one exception.

If tOSU can't get an Urban Meyer or Jon Gruden to run their program, do they go after tOSU grad Bo Pelini, and if so, would Pelini want to go back home to fix a broken program? It could have major ramifications in the B1G.

osu will STILL get all the top athletes in the State of Ohio...all the 5 and 4 stars. Even if scholarships are taken away from osu it won't matter in the least. They will just NOT sign a few 3 stars that they typically would have or they will encourage kids to walk on. Kids growing up in Ohio love osu and there is nothing more that they want to do than play football and bb for them.

If anyone thinks Iowa or the rest of the Big 10 is suddenly going to go into Ohio and start getting 5 and 4 star kids, I think you need to sit down and take a deep breath. Just ain't gonna happen. Anyone who does not believe this, just look at how USC's recruiting and the number of top notch kids they are still getting. The only thing that has remotely hurt them is not going to a big bowl game while under sanctions....THAT is it. After sanctions are removed, USC will again go to BCS games and challenge for the national title....just like osu will. Hell, osu might even challenge for the national title WHILE under sanctions...they just will not get the recognition or be able to play for the national championship.

The only thing that will hurt them is not going to bowls but that will only be for a couple of years and their talent level is not going to diminish one bit. As soon as they are able, they will again be going to the BSC bowls.

The ONLY thing that can hurt osu is IF the NCAA has the balls to really lower the boom and REALLY put some penalities in place...close to the death sentence but not quite. osu will need to have its legs cut out from under them in a big way to change how they will do in fb.

To top it off, osu will probably get a BETTER coach than Tressel...one more suited to the immense talent that they have on their team. Coaches will line up to interview for the osu job, regardless whether they are under sanctions or not. They know when the sanctions are lifted they will be coaching one of the most talented teams in the country. osu may very well still dominate the Big 10 regardless whether they are under sanctions or not. osu will laugh at most penalities...cheating has paid off in a big way the past 10 years...to the point where they will still just reload with 4 and 5 star players.

And Iowa STILL won't be able to beat them. KF won't take chances and unless he decides to go all out to beat osu, it just ain't gonna happen. Through the years, osu could put the 2nd team in and they would play like all americans. The trend of Iowa beating osu only once a decade, on average, is not going to change. osu has had Iowa's number for 60 years...a few penalities are not going to change that aspect. Plus, when Iowa DOES have a chance to beat osu, KF plays it straight and will not take a chance, which dooms Iowa even more against them.

God I wish I could disagree with this.

Unfortunately I really think osu is not going to be harmed in the remotest, other than not being able to play for a national championship and (or) going to BCS bowls. Any sanctions are not going to hurt their recruiting in the least.

Nobody benefits from this mess.

The Big Ten has postured itself as the anti-SEC league that is above cheating. The entire conference's reputation takes a hit as a result.

The conference has already been viewed as competitively inferior to the SEC over the past decade, now that the standard-bearer goes down, this view will only grow stronger.

Meanwhile, short of being dealt much harsher punishment than what USC got, tOSU will still be able to bring in enough caliber athletes to make them a player in the league.

The Buckeyes will not become Iowa State overnight over this.

Sadly, I think all three of these are close to the truth. It's tOSU, for crying out loud.

I gotta say that I disagree with Jon's stance concerning PSU.

PSU regularly recruits VERY well. Furthermore, there is a definite reason why PSU struggled a bit during the '10 season ... any team would if they were BOTH breaking in a new starting QB AND were contending with pretty significant injury-issues on D.

PSU regularly fields an excellent D and when their QB play has been adequate solid, they have been a pretty darn dangerous squad.

Although Iowa has gotten the better of PSU in recent history, I'd say that little of that has to do with Paterno being their coach ... and furthermore I'd say that little of that has to do with the talent level over there either.
