B1G Power Rankings Quick take

I'll go into more detail later..

1. Ohio State
2. Northwestern
3. Wisconsin
4. Nebraska (at least they can score)
5. Michigan (who the heck are these guys?)
6. Michigan State (defense man)
7. Iowa
8. Penn State
9. Minnesota
10. Illinois
11. Indiana
12. Purdue

Teams 6-11 will likely stay in that range all year but do the most changing from week to week. 2-5 will move around some too...Ohio State is clearly the best and Purdue is the worst.

Not bad. It’s hard to separate the muddle in the middle.

Ohio State the clear leader
Tie Northwestern & Wisconsin for second.
Tie Nebraska, Michigan & Michigan State for forth.
Tie Iowa, Penn State, Minnesota & Illinois for seventh.
Tie Illinois & Indiana for tenth.
Purdue last.

Unfortunately Iowa plays all of the top six and only two of the lower five.

I think Jon is fairly accurate but he highlights how weak this conference is really weak is in 2013. It is going to be another ugly January.

Gerry DiNardo ‏@gerrydinardo 24s Sunday Ruminations #Hawkeyes most improved team in B1G from a year ago. Game this week against #Gophers tells us a bunch about both teams.

On the power poll. I still question OSU's defense they've given up a fair number of points against sub-par competition(shutting out Florida A&M tells us nothing). UW played pretty well on the road against a quality opponent but lost on that weird non-call by the officials. I'd put them at #1. Nebraska can score but I think they're subject to implosion(see Pelini) and the defense is a tire fire. UM is the most manic team, MSU is a defense whose offense has been lost at sea. Iowa, improved from last year and seems to have made significant strides this year. Purdue is showing sign of life but their EKG red out looks like the topography of Kansas(but better than KU and maybe, but less likely, KSU). Northwestern, this looks like a 10 win team but will their defense hold up against the power teams?

Here's mine.

1. UW
2. OSU
3. Northwestern
4. UM
5. MSU(comparing them with Iowa: I'd take their defense over our offense or defense but I'd take our special teams and offense over theirs. Too close to call)
5. Iowa(part of my prediction here is that Iowa's improving at a faster rate than the competition...coaching players up is the staff's strength).
7. Bug eaters. OK, they have a good offense but let's not go crazy over putting up big numbers against South Dakota State. Their defense is fun to laugh at.
8. PSU(thin depth, will O'Brien stay?).
9. Minnesota
10. illinois
11. Purdue
12. Indiana

No disagreement, but a lot of sorting out ahead.

1.OSU (give em the trophy)

2. Badgers. That's some running game.

3.-8
I think NWestern is overrated. They're 4-0 and the win @ Cal was impressive. But I just don't think they're an 11-1 or 10-2 team.

Is Michigan just playing lame and will turn it on? Perhaps, but if they're this undisciplined..talent
alone won't win it for em.

Nebby, who knows? Also undisciplined but with enough talent to make a run at the Division. As much as we enjoyed it, the Pellini controversy is fading fast. Neb football is all they've got, don't dare kill the golden goose.

Are the Gophers for real? Are the Hawks resurging? Saturday's game will go a long was to defining both Iowa and the Goophs.

Mich St looks ugly, but some of those PI calls were very...well "Notre Dame". I think we beat em in 2 weeks.

9.-10. Everybody under OSU and Wisconsin in the East stinks. Penn St or Illinois will be a bowl team as Purdue and Indiana are gimmes

11-12. Purdue/Indiana Is it basketball season yet?

Im going to go out on a limb and say Penn State will not be a bowl team this year.

AreWeThere, Welcome back to the forum after nearly a year absence.

How do you distinguish between Indiana and Purdue? really..

We expect the hawks to improve and make a move up the list...don't know if other teams will do that though.

MSU is a different team with that other QB in the game.

Michigan - just can't figure that out -

I can see somebody jumping Nebraska and Michigan at some point. It's early, but I think the Michigan we've seen the last two weeks might be closer to the real Michigan than their fans would like to believe. The only game they've looked really good in was against Notre Dame, who has barely scraped by Purdue and MSU since losing in Ann Arbor. The Irish are way overrated, and so is Michigan.

Penn St should be higher, UCF is probably the best team (maybe second best to UCLA) any B10 has played out of conference this year. No shame in losing to them.

We will learn a bunch in the next 2 weeks.

1) OSU
2) Wisc
3) NW
4-5) nebby / Mich (weird season so far but talent is there)
6-11) MSU, PSU, Illinois, Indiana, Minn, Iowa. Next couple weeks will position these.
12) Purdue (but will inexplicably win a couple in conf)

Random thoughts:
-Indiana can score(punchers chance vs. Bottom 7 teams
-nebby is a momentum team and can score and does have talent (though only decent def was UCLA and scored 20). Def not solid vs the run
-OSU and Wisc solid on both sides, NW will rely on offense.

MSU has no QB and they are going to struggle in a big way in conference play. I am going to go on a limb and say they don't make a bowl.
I don't believe there is any really good or great team in the Big Ten and OSU is very overrated, Michigan has to quit turning the ball over and find a running game.
Iowa is bowl team, just a matter of if they can beat one or two of the better teams in conference play to see where they end up.

As of today

1. Ohio State
-
2. Wisconsin
-
-
3. Northwestern
4. Michigan
-
5. Nebraska
6. Michigan State
7. Minnesota
8. Iowa
9. Penn State
10. Indiana
11. Illinois
-
12. Purdue

I think it's a bit interesting that the Leaders division has perhaps the two strongest teams, and then the bottom 4 teams in the league, while the legends seems like it will have a lot of parity this season.

It looks like most people are thinking we will go 5-7 since they have us rated higher than only two teams we have left to play.

1 thru 1 = Ohio State
2- 11a = Everybody but Purdue which is 11b.

Michigan can get better but will remain beatable on almost every Saturday. Northwestern is as good as it will get. Other teams are catching up to them as they gain experience. Nebraska must rely on offense to carry them. Hold them to under 28 and you have a good chance of beating them. I'll make this statement, Iowa has the talent to improve the most on both sides of the ball as the season progresses. When I look at Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern, and Nebraska the defenses are not going to improve much going forward. Looking at Wisconsin they are pretty much one dimensional on offense. Don't expect the passing game to improve much. Since Iowa doesn't play Indiana, Penn State, or Illinois it is a mute point for me.

Power rankings are based on what teams have shown up to this point. They aren't predictions.

This.

For better or worse, we kind of know where teams like Nebraska and Michigan State stand...they have major flaws, and known strengths. Teams like Iowa, while maybe having more upside, are also more unknown at this point. Next week should tell us a lot more about a lot of teams...

What are you basing this on?
