B1G no spring live coverage explanation

I'm sure this is just a customer service agent trying provide a general response that can be considered a resolution for my inquiry.

Which I mean there explanation would be fair aside from the fact that they streamed practice at a charge to any fans.

I think its just a case of the practice being less marketable or TV friendly... as there was a lot of dead periods. But come'on all spring games are practice. They may try to sell it as a competitive game of 1's vs. 2's but this is hardly ever the case.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the email. Unlike the other 10 Big Ten teams, Iowa did not host a spring game, only a final practice. Therefore, the Big Ten Network did not have a game to televise. In regards to our streaming platform, all streaming packages are offered to users at the same rate despite the event.

I hope this information helps. Thanks for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,
Big Ten Network

My response to this:

Only the hard-core fans of each program are interested in watching the spring game. Those same hard-core fans for Iowa are every bit as interested in watching the final spring practice, as it gives us our only look into how the team is shaping up before August. The "actual" games don't draw much outside of their respective fanbases. So what's the problem? These "games" are hardly marketable outside of each individual fanbase.

Yeah but I mean is the Purdue or Indiana game really more marketable than Iowa?

The whole channel really does need a step up in marketable media other than actual competitions.

The pulse, and football coaching schemes were nice additions but I wish Bigten Network would offer more consistent entertaining media.

The behind the teams shows for basketball seemed like all fluff to me with way too many commercials to keep my interest.

We all complain about ESPN being bias but shows like 30 for 30, Pardon the interruption, First take all kill anything Big 10 has to offer. Why doesn't the Bigten just move to covering even out of conferences stories, add something like a daily sports new show but just with a slant to big ten.

That's not exactly true. You're much more likely to draw rival fans to a full game than to a practice with tons of downtime. If you were a MSU fan and tuned in on Saturday you wouldn't really be able to get any useful information. Watching the Michigan spring game, it was clear that Hoke hasn't had a big impact on the offense yet. Still a bunch of Denard running around, still a defense full of holes.

Still, it's not like Michigan's game was prime television. They might get a few token fans from other teams, but it's not like we're comparing the Super Bowl with a rerun of NCIS here. The difference can't be too large.

I agree with this. But that's also because those shows don't display anywhere near the level of bias as the shows like College Football Live. Wilbon/Kornheiser/Adande/etc. are not directly employed by ESPN. They are journalists for their own regional newspapers first, as opposed to Chris Fowler, Jesse Palmer, etc. who are strictly ESPN employees.

The Big Ten Network already does this. It's called Big Ten Football and Beyond. It's my favorite program actually. They bring in a guy from Sporting News I think and Teddy Greenstein, and they talk B1G and all other aspects of college football. Very good show.

Oh.. well maybe they should re run it more often. I gotta keep up on their programming schedule i guess.

Although they could easily have the practice since they have 24 hours of programming to fill and show a bunch of junk nobody cares about, I still don't blame them for this. It'd be different if we had a spring game and not just a practice.

Guys: This is Ferentz being Ferentz. He is the ONLY coach in the conference who does not have a spring game. This is why no fans show up anymore and why it is not televised. The guy doesn't care a lick about Media exposure or PR.

Accordingly, you take the good with the bad. Less player injuries. The most boring spring in D1.

not to hijack the thread....but I ABSOLUTELY hate the reference to the Big Ten as B1G....are we the Big conference good lord.

Agreed, but I think it was a combination of a bad TV product and a desire to sign up more people for their online services.

This is the answer, the fact that we don't have an "actual" game is just their excuse. The BTN loves to double-dip on their customers. They should try to come up with a way that allows people who already pay for the cable channel to use online services for free. If you don't have the cable channel, then fork over $8.
