B1G in contact with Rutgers?

Of which Rutgers delivers just 20%.

Chicago isn't as big of a market, but 19% care about college football. And the Big Ten owns that 19% because Chicago is in the middle of Big Ten country. NYC is an outlier, with no such geography working in its favor.

Big Ten fans (or Notre Dame fans) make up 19% of the Chicago population. That's a huge chunk. Rutgers, Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State's COMBINED foothold in NYC makes up just 4.9% of the total population. That's not a lot of leverage to strong arm cable companies to pick up the BTN.

Chicago is a smaller market, but the Big Ten has WAY, WAY more leverage there.

your comparing the NY market that has one B1G team close by to Chicago? they are literally surrounded by B1G teams and smaller markets!

keep things the same and B1G will probably still get picked up in the NY market eventually (3-5 yrs). Add Rutgers + anybody, not only does Rutgers plus that anybody immediately get better (and by immediate I mean in terms of turning a program around- so 1-3 years), but you now have leverage over one of the most densely populated areas in America.

can you imagine inner city kids looking west once again, with their parents seeing the value of a Midwest education? Fran would ensure a NY pipeline with talent Iowa never gets.

With the attention that MMA & UFC is getting, maybe even a wrestling renaissance in the NE opening even more pipelines there.

baseball, women's basketball, etc......

'nuff said?

I don't know why we, as fans, give a **** about markets or brands. I am for Rutgers because it is one additional team that likely won't take wins away from the Hawkeyes. I don't know about all of you but I want to see Iowa have a perennial shot at winning the Big 10 title.

Conferences need doormats too. Why many of you are hopeful of teams that would, in all likelihood, move Iowa down in the pecking order is beyond me.

Yes, I compare them to Chicago. We OWN Chicago, because of all those nearby teams. Cable companies can never afford to ignore 20% of their market. But even with Rutgers, the Big Ten would own less than 5% of the NYC market. In terms of leverage, the BTN wouldn't have much in NYC.

New York has no such geographical pulls. It's simply not Big Ten country. And Rutgers won't make it so.

this post is like being 26 and living at home with your parents. wether we move up/down the pecking order we will have a seat at the table. when one door shuts another opens. we (B1G) have to take a chance and go outside our comfort zone (aka leave mom & dad's). adding Rutgers or a Missouri does not hurt us, why is every hawk fan afraid of being mediocre?

look around hawk fans, we average 7-8 wins and 4-5 losses and are mediocre now. Why does adding teams prevent us from keeping the status quo?

ND, Rutgers, Missouri, (anybody) does not change our future win average. you could argue with whatever teams we do add they will not pose a greater threat than what we already have with the addition of Nebraska. you could say the worst is behind us!

Expansion, it appears, is going to happen whether we the fans want it too or not.

If expansion occurs the Big 10 must position themselves in the best possible way. Delaney and those around him are very smart men. If Rutgers is being looked at, they are being looked at for a reason. The Big 10 is not just going to invite someone to join the conference because they feel sorry for the school. They will do it for TWO reasons, DOLLARS and Academics/research. There is a reason that many many schools would like to join the Big 10 and those are the two reasons...especially the academics/research side.

Personally, I would think that the Big 10 would look at two schools in the east --one to try to get into the NYC market and one to get into the Washington DC market. Both Rutgers and Maryland fit that bill. Virginia Tech or Virginia would be two other choices although I don't think they have the academics that the Big 10 wants. Virginia Tech definitely has the fanbase though. But the Big 10 did invite Nebraska who has border line academics.

Personally, I have always wanted Missouri to be invited because they are a natural fit. If Missouri does not get invited, I hope Delaney and Co. go after two programs in the east. If a conference is going to expand, it might as well go big.

The other two schools are obvious....Notre Dame and Texas. Add these four schools and the Big 10 is easily the most dominant conference in the country in fanbase and popularity. They might dominate the football scene like the SEC, but the Big 10 would command incredible dollars. No other conference in America could even remotely command the dollars that the Big 10 would.

People say that both ND and Texas would destroy the conference. Perhaps, but both of these teams joining the Big 10 means tremendous advantages for both schools. Both schools would join as any other member of the Big 10...perhaps that would smell to Texas and ND fans, but the dollars and the academics/research side of it would easily compensate both teams.

ND fans are worried that they would lose national appeal. Fans are fans, they don't care whether they are watching the games on national tv, ESPN, or on the Big 10 network. The fans just want to watch the game. With ND, Texas, and two east coast teams, the Big 10 network will evolve into one of the top sports networks in the country.

If we are being fair Nebraska doesn't have "borderline" academics. If it weren't for some technicalities and politics they would likely still be in the AAU.

I honestly do not care if the Big Ten adds anyone and I would not get overly excited about Iowa vs Rutgers matchups. But I look at expansion without my black and gold glasses on. It is no secret the Big Ten has wanted to expand east you already have Penn State out east and adding another would give them a rival. You have one of the top up and coming sports networks in the country that ESPN is quickly becoming nervous of and you need to keep expanding its foot print. So when you look at expansion the Big Ten you are looking at what schools expand your foot print while meeting all the academic requirements. Rutgers is one of the few schools they can add out east that could get them a big time market and still meet all the academic requirements.

But all of this may be a mute point anyway as the Big Ten has been quiet on expansion and all the talk is surrounding the ACC. I think these are smart moves the ACC is making that will solidify their conference and get them a bigger paycheck.

Virginia Tech is tied with Iowa and MSU at 28 for rankings of public universities. They do have Big Ten academics. However, Virginia is up at Michigan levels. Maryland matches with OSU at 19.

Each of those schools would be ideal candidates. I just don't know if they are going to be all that interested in leaving the ACC.

The way the superconferences will work, there will be four four team divisions. This gives each conference three post season games. These will be HUGE money makers.

Accordingly, each division needs to make sense.

You need an 85,000 plus stadium school, a 70,000 plus stadium school, a 50,000 plus stadium school, and one smaller

Nebby, UM, PSU, and OSU are the 85,000 +
Iowa, Wisky, MSU are 70,000+
Illinois, Purdue, Minny are around 50,000
Indy and NW are 41 and 36

So, we need one school in the second tier ND with 80,000 would be perfect.

We need one school in the third tier
Missouri with 61,000 would fit nicely

We need two schools at the 4th tier

Maryland - 39,000
Virginia 45,000
Rutgers 46,000
Kansas 45,000 would all work

However, we need to think of the divisions
West
Nebby
Iowa
Missouri (need tier 3)
Minny

WCentral
Michigan
MSU
Illinois
NW

ECentral
OSU
Wisky
Purdue
Indy

East
PSU
ND (need tier 2)
(Need 2 tier 3s)
2 out of Virginia, Maryland, and Rutgers

While everyone wants Huge programs, We don't actually need that for competitive balance in the 4 division system. We also need schools to combine with PSUs division.
