Not sure if there has already been a thread devoted to this yet, but anyway...
I really think the introduction of divisions into the Big Ten will benefit Iowa possibly more than any other program in the Conference.
And it is obvious, but all the program has to do is beat out 5 other schools to get the chance to play in the Rose Bowl, going forward. Beat out the 5 schools in our division, or even tie one or two others but get the tie-breaker between them, and we play for the conference title game. While that is true for all other teams in our Division, I believe more than any other school in our Division we are historically and generally capable of winning any one game (our games are close) we play regardless of our record in any such year, particulary if the intangibles are on our side.
In other words, due to how the program is built and game coaching style, I like Iowa's chances in any one year of winning the division of 6 and then winning the one add-on (championship)game. I like those chances more than I like Iowa's chances of winning the conference outright over the course of the whole conference season. Also, looking back over the past 8 years (as posted by another member to this site, and which is the most reliable historical indicator), our program is better than that at Nebraska and Michigan and Michigan State. Even this year a 7-5 Iowa team plowed MSU, really should have beaten Wisconsin but lost by one, and played OSU to the wire. Just get the Hawks into that title game, and see what happens.
