B1G Championships





Lee and maybe Marinelli are the only talented wrestlers right now. Lee at least has shown he can beat the elite guys.
 


There were multiple injuries and illnesses. 2 top wrestlers were not able to compete yesterday and another was ruled ineligible under for unfair reasons. Others had to wrestle even though they were not at full strength.

Iowa’s full roster is much better. Kemerer and Downey were huge losses. I expect that Kemerer will be back for nationals. I heard that there was a flu bug going around.

They will get healthy and they will be ready for nationals!

So, Glynn, Stickley, Gunther, Happel, Bowman and Wilke were all either hurt or sick the entire season?

Got it. Now I feel much better about Nationals.
 


we are an average program at best and have been for last 3 years. I don't know problem but not the Iowa wrestling I grew up watching.

Lee was his usual spectacular self, and Kemerer looked great. Marinelli was upset in a very close match with Massa. I was concerned going into that match and it turned out prophetic. Marinelli missed out on a TD with possible back points at the end of the 2nd literally by less than a second, and he was in on a shot in SV, but allowed Massa to get position.

Wilke, Turk, Gunther, Glynn and Holloway were their usual selves. Glynn and Holloway really stunk it up. Even Sorenson returned to some bad habits, and barely squeaked it out with almost zero offense. Stoll as usual is getting by with his Greco-Roman style.

As a team, we are basically already out of it in a distant 4th as of right now.

You mean Bowman? Holloway didn't make the postseason roster.

It could happen, no doubt. Lee's loss was maybe the motivation that Spencer needed in order to put him over the top. He can beat anybody, the kid is ultra-talented.

I have hopes that Kemerer is using his loss as extra motivation as well. Plus, Nolf does not look to be anywhere near 100%.

I had high expectations for Alex Marinelli going into B1G championships, but after 3 losses this past weekend, I've tempered those quite a bit. A top-3/4 out of him would be very welcome and quite an accomplishment, IMO.

And finally, if Sorenson can finally beat Retherford (you would think he's probably pretty f'n tired of losing to him by now), then that would be grand.

We will see. They have 2 weeks to practice and get ready. Even after a disappointing showing this last weekend, I'm still very excited for Nationals. Hopefully their poor showing at B1G's is the motivation they needed to kick it in gear. C'mon, Hawks!
 


It would appear we are going to come home a wounded team. Kemerer had to injury default, Marinelli may as well have, and Stoll was gritty to get a 5th despite his latest set-back. But clearly these guys - for the most part - gave all they had. Hoping for another Lee pin tonight. That would clinch 3rd for us - a MAJOR accomplishment, especially following the B1G debacle.
