This could bode well for the Hawkeyes with Strength of schedule. Pre League games are going to be VERY important, and hold our own at home.

Ironic that in teh same article you note that Fran was mistaken when referencing a won/loss record you state that Iowa went 8-8 in teh B1G last year. Iowa was 8-10 in conference last year. Maybe JD should have looked closer at Hawkeye history.

"Fran McCaffery said to Andy Katz in a recent interview that no Big Ten team has ever missed the tournament that won nine games, but he should have looked closer at Hawkeye history; the 1997-1998 team went 9-7 in league (with 20 wins overall) and finished 5th in the league and went to the NIT."

1997-98 was a much weaker year for the B1G. Only 4 teams were taken then while 2012-13 expectations are 7-8. This year it would be tough to miss the NCAA with 20 wins overall and 9-9 or better in this league going into the B1G tourney. That's 11-2 preseason + 9-9 B1G. Maybe that's an optimistic outlook but not unreasonable to hope for. Some of us like to look at the season that way.

Tom Davis' 1994-95 team went 9-9, and went to the NIT. Steve Alford's 2006-07 team went 9-7 and had NO post-season at all. So yeah, it's definitely possible to win 9 in the league and not go to the NCAA Tournament. I don't remember how many teams from the conference went to the NCAA's in 1995 and 2007, though. That said, I doubt the Big Ten was that great in 2007, since Iowa finished 4th that year, and didn't have a post-season.

If the Big Ten is as tough this year as it's supposed to be, and Iowa wins 9 games in the league, that definitely gives them a good shot to get in. But they can't afford to stumble much in this non-conference, weak as it is. Since the committee is so in love with brutal OOC schedules, it would suit Iowa to go 10-8 in the league, and win at least one Big Ten Tournament game, just to be on the safe side.

Francis seems to be either seriously misinformed about Iowa basketball history, or a really bad spinmeister.

I think it's the ladder ghost...

Big Ten has two preseason 1st team all americans with Zeller and DeShaun Thomas....Zeller is preseason POY.....Trey Burke is 3rd team.....according to Sporting News.

Big Ten will be the best BB league in the country. If the Hawks can finish 7th, good season.

Does this mean we can be like the SEC in football and list our conference teams as the top ten. If that crap keeps up fans around the country may need to request that all ESPN channels be taken off their TV programming in protest. Maybe they can create a new channel just for the SEC and call it the Bubba channel. Problems would occur though as their fans would not be able to spell the channel out and they would need to have some sort of symbol that they fans could recognize like......"$$$". I am sure some of you can come up with even a better symbol....... Oh here's one. (!)

ESPN has a contract with the SEC and just by coincidence the top fifteen in college football at one point look like their conference listings. Arkansas is a prime example of the ignorance of the whole situation. Something tells me that we won't see seven big ten teams in the top fifteen even though our conference is by far the superior conference in college basketball.

Yeah, Arkansas was a mistake in the pre-season top 10. So was Michigan. If only ESPN would stop picking on us because we have a terrible football conference.

The reason they rank all their SEC teams so high is so that the guarantee that one or two of them are playing in the championship every year. Michigan doesnt even have a quarterback. They have a runningback pretending to be a quarterback. His passing skills suck. We proved that twice.

No, the reason the SEC teams are all ranked so high is because they're all better than everyone else. Go ahead and convince me that there are two teams out there that are better than any team in the SEC. Please. Convince me of that and I'll concede.

I'm with Ghost on this one. People try to argue the SEC conspiracy, and I see the connection. But it's a chicken/egg question. Did ESPN sign with the SEC in order to create the best conference? Or did ESPN sign with the SEC because they were already the best conference. The answer, almost incontrovertibly, is that ESPN signed the SEC because they are the best conference in college football. People just need to deal with it. The SEC is way, way better than every other conference in the country.

ESPN has a contract with other conferences too. The conspiracy argument is just...so....stupid.

For God's sake, ESPN broadcast the Iowa-Minnesota game. Unless ESPN's master plan is to make the BoneG look bad by showing the nation a game between two turkeys, the very fact that they would even consider broadcasting this game takes an H Bomb to the notion ESPN hates the BoneG.
