Auburn's Chezik - on side kick

Saw the post game where Chezik talked about their on side kick. They worked all week on that because they felt going into the game they would need to take one possession away from Georgia. They called for it at the right time and they executed it....turned the game around and won the game.... as expected.

It made me wonder about our situation? Would KF ever think like this going into a game? Think that we have to take one possession away from Northwestern (for instance) or OSU? Would KF have the mentality to think.. what do I need to do to insure we win this game?

Now assuming that KF would even remotely consider that to win a championship that "I must take a possession away from the opponent". Would his team be able to execute a critical play like that?

I am going to assume that first, KF would never even remotely consider what could be done to win a game... his style is safe, lets not risk it. AND if he did decide to try it.. the team wouldn't be able to execute it anyway. Why? Because he doesn't have that killer attitude.. his trick plays (fake FG last year) are so tentative (he doesn't want it to blow up on him) that they usually do blow up on him.... which solidifies his conservative, see I told you so.. too risky attitude.

KF showed his coaching colors last year at OSU. The Rose Bowl is on the line, and we've got the ball needing 35-40 yards for a good chance at a FG and win.

Instead we took a knee and opted for overtime where we never stood a chance, not on the road.

I understand we had a freshman QB, but this same QB kept us in the game, albeit with some luck (his pass to Tony into triple coverage was lucky to be completed).

Still, we ended up losing the game anyway, and myself would not have been upset had we tried for the win and threw a INT or fumbled. OSU would have given us a cushion until we got closer to FG range.....and who knows.

But that display last year is the reason Iowa will need a absolute perfect storm of events to ever make it back to Pasadena.

I'm sorry, but can we please get over this collective obsession with trick plays? Of all the problems this Iowa team has, the lack of trick plays is not one of them.

To use your example, had Iowa onside kicked against Northwestern and failed to recover, KF would be getting SAVAGED on this board. Absolutely SAVAGED. Yes, he's getting ripped anyway, but I guarantee that is all people would be talking about.

This season, more than most in recent memory, has had a lot of high-profile and very successful trick plays. I'm willing to be that a future season will have a lot of high-profile and disastrous trick plays. In fact, I remember a few of those from the Hayden Fry era (he called some good ones, but he called some brutal ones too). If we could take care of business offensively and defensively, which everyone agrees we have the ability to do, we don't need to run flea-flickers to beat teams.

And if we were even competent on special teams we'd all be eating rainbow stew and drinking free Bubble-up.

What? With divisional play we can go 5-3 in the conference and still have a shot at the Rose Bowl. I'm willing to bet Iowa wins multiple Big Ten titles in the next decade. Deciding the championship in a late-season game at a neutral site works in Iowa's favor more than just about any other team.

There is no obsession with trick plays.... but it does show the mentality of a coach in position to play for a natl championship scheming to insure success.

I don't think KF is even wired that way? I honestly think that KF is very happy with 7-4 or 8-3.....and if luck falls his way to win one or more games, its just gravy.

This team has had a B10 championship game with OSU in its grasp for several weeks now... it sure hasn't looked like the team has been playing to go out an take it.

Indiana and NW were separation games. Respect games. Instead of establishing ourselves as one of the top 2 teams in the Big 10 we relegated ourselves as an also ran and a finish in 5th place?

We all know this team should be one of the top 2 teams in the B10! It doesn't get any easier next year.

Exactly, Never quit when there is time on the clock. And never, EVER quit when there is time on the clock, you are playing in the toughest stadium to play in in the county and with a freshman QB with his first week of practice... Otherwise you may end up with 4 QB sacks...

Not likely.... but, the good news is we play Ind and NW early in the season starting next year so we won't have long to build expectations before losing to these teams
