Attendance + crowd question

Every year I gripe where they put the old donors and the students. Watching those old donors filing out of the arena at the last TV timeout makes me sick and it ticks me off every time I go to a game.

But a question I have is why does Carver have such a big press area and in prime seating? This is something I do not see in other arena's.

That's the trade-off for having the courtside seats on the other side of the court. Most places will put you down there (the United Center also puts press behind the benches, which was awesome for the BTT). But they can't do that because they put opposing teams' families and big donors/special guests court side.

The issue I have with it is that the press box seems to have been the same since the 80's. Each credential has like their own executive desk with a place to put all of their hanging files, pencils, and to spread out their press releases. The press doesn't need that anymore they just have a laptop or iPad so I think it would be possible to find a different place or shrink that area greatly.

I agree 100% about bleachers in the student section. They dont even have to take valuable seats from the sidelines, just do General admission bleachers.

I think the press box was moved during the renovation

Yes, the press area was moved to somewhat less desirable seats during the renovation. As to the width of the aisles, I wonder if safety, evacuation requirements, contribute to the configuration...don't really know. I know that some folks leave early from the games; that is also true in football. However, I am an older fan, as are many of the people around me. I do not, and most of those around me do not leave early...like, never. I see people with small children, a few "regulars," those in big donor seats, leave early on a regular basis. No hard data here, just an observation. As to the student section: I am not sure spreading them out around the arena would be a great idea, even in seats close to the floor. Having them where they are, bunched up, around the pep band, with the cheerleaders and spirit squad right in front of them, very near the visitor bench where they often get on the players and coaches, seems to me to be just fine. I read in a variety of places that student attendance at football and basketball games is down nation wide. They tend to watch on TV where they can have a beer, turn the set off if they so desire, hang out with close friends, all for free. Universities around the country are very worried about future attendance trends as the millennium generation grows into their 30's and 40's and beyond...will attendance at major sporting events just continue to decline? Would be very sad.

I don't know about that. The big reason Carver is built the way it is, isn't because of wrestling/volleyball/gymnastics. It was built to also hold concerts, which is no longer a thing. Now they either cram everyone into the Field House or IMU ballroom, or put them outside in Hubbard Park. Not that those are always bad venues (depends on the artist), but Carver was designed for that and is no longer used for it. Which makes it stupid to have a less-than-sports-focused arena for two of our biggest sports.

I don't know if this is necessarily true. One of the reasons they dont have many concerts at carver is because the roof can not hold all the weight of the bands speakers and screens and everything. This is one of the major complaints of the place as a concert venue.

Maybe that's changed since it was built (maybe it was up to par in the '80s, because they used to actually do this). But it was built with multipurpose use in mind, not just basketball.

Not sure if serious, because this is nothing like the press row at Carver, Kinnick, Banks, Pearl or the CRWC.

As a student, I've been to every game so far. However, other students are eagerly waiting for the ND matchup. Most figure we will breeze by the other non-conference opponents, and it will help to have some success in the tournament over break. The second round of midterms last week didn't help either. As far as the seating, it would be nice to have a couple sections opposite of the away teams bench. The student section once was like that, right?

Thanks for sharing.

Good post and interesting comments. I am not sure which is more disappointing; the lack of students at games or the empty premium, padded chairs reserved for royalty. It looks awful to have those floor level seats empty game after game, but I guess the important people have too much going on. Maybe the powers that be could ask these folks to let them know if they can't make it and they could raffle them off for the Children's Hospital or Ronald McDonald House. Been to two games this year and the silence is deafening. Granted the competition has been anemic, but other big ten teams are drawing larger, more boisterous crowds from what I have seen. Regarding the students, not sure what the deal is. Without the band, there would be no noise from the student section. Props to the dude with cut off black and yellow suspenders and work boots and the 3 kids that put the yellow hats on and ride their invisible horses around the floor. They did have a great halftime show on Sunday--the father / son combo with their dog show was excellent.

After looking at the old Fieldhouse I am beginning to think that Iowa consistently overcompensates on everything and it usually leads to a sub par result.
