ATH Matt Nelson to announce Thursday

Notre Dame and Coach Kelly would be easy to turn down in my opinion... He's in the same mold as Bo Pelini. Just not the kind of coach I'd want to play for. However, it is ND and their tradition is ridiculous. If I was actually in the recruits shoes I would probably have a different opinion.

I think it's between Iowa and Stanford. Growing up a Hawkeye fan, I have to admit it would still be a tough decision for me between the two. Stanford is an elite academic school in a really cool location. That would be hard for any 17 or 18 year old to turn down. Iowa on the other hand has an outstanding medical school, great reputation for developing defensive linemen, and considering he went to Xavier his family would be very close. Let's hope he lays down roots in his home state.

One question I haven't seen any reporter write on is what impact Notre Dame's religious nature might have on Nelson, who attends a Catholic high school.

If it is anything like Dowling, the catholics are the ones in the stands cheering, not playing.

He played for Coach Schulte, I think he has developed a thick skin when it comes to that kind of coaching personality. I can't speak for Dowling but ALL of the Xavier players are catholic and have been together since grade school.

interesting. We always had a joke that once Dowling was up by 30-40 points, that was when the catholics got to play. What with the schollies they could give to bring in the ringers and all.

Like I said I can't speak for Dowling but Xavier doesn't recruit kids. In fact Nelson would be the first D1 football player for Xavier.

meaning he wants to stay at the same school to go to med school as undergrad? maybe.

if he is focused on his education (and I'm not sure if you are implying that I am hating on him because he if focused on his education - it is just the opposite), i think he'd go stanford and then use that (if he excels and still wants to go to med school in 4 years) to get into a premier medical school anywhere in the country.

Yes on staying at the same school. And no, I wasn't insinuating that you were hating on him.

A couple of reasons for going to Iowa besides staying home is that he will likely already have an "in" at the University Medical school. He'll continue to develop connections there that will likely help him when he applies and guide him through the specifics in the field he wants to study. If he believes he wants to go to Iowa's medical school then it makes sense that he go to Iowa as an undergrad.

It'd be great to land Nelson. I always like getting the top in-state talent. Kelly's a great coach, but I wouldn't want to play for him.

if the kid is 6'8" and 250 now, he ends up being an OT.

Nah, Too Tall Nelson! :)

Pretty much this. I do not like our chances considering the competition, especially considering that the kid did not grow up as a Hawkeye fan.

I'm not worried that he wasn't a Hawkeye fan growing up, if he didn't like Iowa we wouldn't be in his top 3. With that said, we are up against some stiff competition, but you never know. I'm hoping he wants to stay close to home.

Isn't Hamilton a junior this year? He could be a nice replacement for CJF.

As for the OP... This kid has huge size. Imagine Doyle working his magic on him. Beast.Mode.

Doyle-izing kids should be banned by the Big Ten because it is an unfair advantage for Iowa.
