ATH Matt Nelson to announce Thursday

Multiple sites are reporting that Cedar Rapids Xavier standout TE/DE Matt Nelson will announce his college choice this Thursday. Nelson will choose between Iowa, Stanford, and Notre Dame.

According to 247Sports' "Crystal Ball," analysts are torn over where they think Nelson will end up. Stanford has an early lead according to those analysts, but the only analyst so far who has made a pick in the past 2 weeks has predicted Nelson to Iowa. Expect the "Crystal Ball" to change a lot the next 48 hours.

Here's an article from Pat Harty that gives a glimpse into why Nelson could end up picking Iowa.

Here's some film of the 6'8", 245-lb Nelson.

I wouldn't blame him for picking any of the three. But it is somewhat weird because I heard he came from a Cyclone family. All three schools are known for their tight-ends, even though for Iowa it might not mean what it used to. He would be a stellar replacement for CJF.

Iowa is recruiting him at defensive line.

I may be wrong but I believe the coaches have him projected at DE. He is already a monster, I dont think he plays TE at Iowa.

Iowa coaches compared him to Jason Taylor of Dancing with the Stars, who also played for the Dolphins.

Duzey will be a good replacement for CJF.

Sounds like a smart kid and I hope he picks Iowa but if he doesn't I won't be overly disappointed. He seems to be extremely interested in his career after football. Stanford is a good school and if he picked them, then he will most likely be on a PAC-12 championship team.

I do think that this staff needs to pick up a good pass rush DE and soon. It seems that the staff put such and effort into fixing the interior of the DL that they forgot about the DE's and what it takes to get pressure from the outside.

Word on the street is Nelson was really impressed with world renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Amendola out of Iowa city and that may be a big factor in his decision.

Don't you mean "Duzey will be an improvement from CJF"?

I think CJF can be a great player but he quite hasn't lived up to the hype yet.

CJF had more catches last year than Moeaki, Meyer, or Reisner ever had in a season. He was only 2 behind Scott Chandler's best year. His yardage was better than Moeaki's best year and very close to Reisner and Meyer's best seasons. He didn't catch TD passes last year, but neither did anyone else.

that's what the pat hardy article states, linked by the OP.

And I don't get that. You can go to any college and get your undergraduate degree - iowa's sports medicine program really doesn't effect any undergrad to any effect. if you wanted to go to iowa's or any medical school all you do is select an undergrad program, and then also make sure you take the 'pre-med' courses as required and voila you are set to apply to any medical school in the country. iowa or otherwise, amendola and the iowa sports medicine program has no bearing on his undergrad work. but hey, if it works to sell him to play football at iowa, i'm all for it.

I'm pretty sure Amendola is Iowa's team doctor. I imagine Nelson will have quite a bit of contact with him.

Maybe he wants continuity? Of course I'd love for the kid to leave the state, but I certainly can't hate on a kid that is so focused on his education.

No he hasnt done all he can do, but who on the offense in the last couple of years has been maxed to their potential? Maybe some Olinemen? The offense was too much of a mess to know what Iowa really has.

meaning he wants to stay at the same school to go to med school as undergrad? maybe.

if he is focused on his education (and I'm not sure if you are implying that I am hating on him because he if focused on his education - it is just the opposite), i think he'd go stanford and then use that (if he excels and still wants to go to med school in 4 years) to get into a premier medical school anywhere in the country.

he'd have contact with any team doctor anywhere he went to school if he chose to, and that would have no bearing on him with his undergrad degree or focus. come time to get a letter of recommendation in his medical school application, sure amendola would be one of his writers, i'm sure.
