At what point do 3 pointers not make sense for this team?

What is enough? I stated seeing games...are you pulling a herby and going off of video.

He is a combination of marble and white in skill set. This will allow him to play both the 3 and 4. He will play the 3 not as well as marble but better than white. He will play the 4 also but not as well as white. He is a better shooter than white and ballhandler. He can finish at the rim better than marble (imo marble lacks this right now and is why he doesn't get enough and 1s). He has similar skills to a gordon heyward...though not at that level.

Not pulling a Herbie my friend. Don't go there. The kid is a stretch 4 and does not have the same ball skills as White. He hasnt touched the floor in college yet and we're saying he's comparable to Heyward. Maybe at the HS level. Time will tell at the D1 level. But I don't see it.

Woodbury knows how to screen and screen well. Our bigs actively screen. Our guards were quick shooting the ball and later just missing.
Stiff arming a shooter or taking away their landing by undercutting them even on their landing are both fouls...

He knows, but he's slow. Not stereotypical new breed of 7 footers. Fouls or not, they don't get called often. Most fans don't notice. That's what IU did. Part of the way the game is called. When a 3 is released, often the shooter is moving forward. You can take away that space. Both teams have a right to that space until established. When in the error moving forward, you don't own that space. Then what happens is a minor collision that looks incidental but it throws off the future. Don't believe it? Watch intently.

I still believe the 3 point shooting will come around.

Iowa was 1 or 2 3 pointers from beating IU. Most of the 3 pointers were good shots... the shooters need to take those 3 point shots.

Of course it won't have mattered with a couple of better decisions in floor play (ie 2 or 3 less turnovers) or if Mel wouldn't have gotten hurt.

If Mel would have been on the floor in the 2nd half with Woody in foul trouble, Iowa would have won.

IOWA is BACK

Have you never shot threes in a game before? Your landing is critical. When the defender is not concerned about you blowing by them and using a pick down low, they guard you tighter. Makes perfect sense to those who have shot 3's before. A good defender isn't as keyed in on jumping with you and blocking the shot as much as taking away your landing. Refs don't call body contact down low anyway. Some coaches teach NOT to put the hand up, but to take away the feet and maybe a stiff arm to the chest which also disrupts the landing and makes you think about things the next time you shoot. Gets in your head and it can hurt. Refs seldom call the hand/forearm in the chest either. Watch a well coached game closely if you don't believe it. Most fans watch the ball going toward the basket or where ever it goes. Want to really understand, watch off the ball and watch foot work, spacing and such.

Have you seen most of Iowa's misses this year? They aren't usually under a lot of duress. They get good looks and simply don't hit them. And that's part of the reason they keep getting such good looks.

I'll disagree the players are taught an illegal close out on the shot; in my experience it is called with regularity.
As the previous poster stated, we just are not a great shooting team whether under duress, being fouled, or wide open.

I just don't agree. You remember the open ones. I see it differently. Given that analysis, then they really aren't competitors, and I disagree with that. If they can't 1/2 the way thru the season hit 3's then they as a team never will. Bring on new guys. Guess we aren't back yet. You just don't see teams shoot as miserably from three for such a long spell. These guys got here by being players. Not buying the argument. You don't get to be D1 and not shoot as a guard or 3/4 position. If you can't shoot open threes then you try to set things up to hit on the fly under pressure. You don't just keep doing the same thing. Starting to sound like a KF rule.

Marble was shooting 48% from three going into this game and then went 0-6 or whatever he was.

A big key for us this year will be if we can make outsides shots.

Of course we have to shoot them to open up everything else.

You can do a lot more than be a 3 point shooter and play D1 basketball. We have a lot of scorers, but no specialty 3 point shooters. Josh O was supposed to give us that dimension but has been inconsistent as have others. Indiana was merely a reflection of the same shooting we have see against Like Howard, South Carolina, and Gardner Webb.
The 3 point shot is a weakness for this team. Nothing more. The addition of just 1 player (see Gatens, Matt) can make a weakness less noticeable.

This is true to an extent, as teams are able to fly at our shooters (especially Josh) because there’s no worry of dribble penetration. However, players nowadays aren’t able to affect the landing of shooters because shooters are taught how to flop (Exhibit A: Marble vs. Indiana) and refs are taught to call it (Exhibit B: Ed Hightower).
