Article about Ferentz's highest rated recruit ever (Bonecrusher)

Agree at the time and for many years after that, but a lot of time has past since then. And to have 1% compassion for another human being isn’t the worst thing in the world to have. At least have some understanding of how our society contributes to this in some fashion.
I do have empathy for him, he has wasted his life and harmed many others. It is up to him to work some change when he gets out. I wish him well. Talk is different than doing.

Kinda beside the point, but I don't think he was the highest rated recruit for Ferentz ever. I know the thread title is sarcastic when it refers to him as that. But we have had higher rated recruits, this guy just had the craziest nickname.

Well...from what I have read the linking of violent behavior and pot use is dubious at best.

I would argue it might be a chicken egg thing. Which came first the violent man or the weed? Was the weed a key that unlocked his violent nature? I have read about a very, very small percentage of people that might be prone to violence after smoking pot.

My experience has been I have run into far more mean drunks than mean, violent pot smokers.

Mean drunks, several 100. Violent pot smokers, 0.
You're right.

I wasn't clear.

It's regular use of pot beginning as an adolescent (3-4x/wk) that increases substantially those with a certain genetic marker that leads to violent behavior, psychosis, schizophrenia.

Regular use of pot as an adult after the brain has fully developed doesn't have a correlation to violence.

A large majority percentage of the mass shooters, serial killers, and violent rampagers that occur "out of the blue" are due to this genetic marker & pot use.

He was definitely the highest recruit anyway.

I did nothing but smoke pot as a teenager, and this really pisses me off!

there is plenty of evidence that regular use/abuse of pot (especially starting at a young age) does lead to a disproportinate percentage of violence.

chemicals do effect behavior and personalities. ultimately, however, i agree that the individual is responsible.
I think people miss the point when talking about this subject. 007 drinks alcohol and he's cool. Cheech and Chong as well as Bob Marley are cool because they are into cannabis.
People see movies like:
Days of wine and roses
Lost weekend
Panic in Needle park
Requiem for a Dream
Candy
Clean and Sober

And they react one of 4 ways.
1) Drugs are bad
2) Drugs expand your mind. They numb your pain thus making you stronger and more able to endure hardship. They are good because they allow you to travel beyond your natural abilities.
3) Drugs aren't bad, people are bad
4) Drugs make good people bad, and bad people worse.

I was lucky to be born a nerd. I was a kid and this stuck with me.

PIKE: Did they ever live on the surface of this planet? Why did they go underground?
VINA: War, thousands of centuries ago.
PIKE: That’s why it’s so barren up there?
VINA; The planet’s only now becoming able to support life again.
PIKE: So the Talosians who came underground found life limited here and they concentrated on developing their mental power.
VINA: But they found it’s a trap, like a narcotic, because when dreams become more important than reality, you give up travel, building, creating. You even forget how to repair the machines left behind by your ancestors. You just sit, living and reliving other lives left behind in the thought record.

Non-prescription and often prescription drugs are an admission that reality is too tough for the individual. If you need chemicals, you're weak. That's how I always looked at it. And I never wanted to see the face of a weakling when I looked in the mirror.

The imprisoned football player is a separate subject in some ways. Saying people involved chemicals are weak are is easy to say if you've never walked in someone's shoes. Fetal alcohol is just one area.

Are they "weak"? in some ways. Not sure how you are using the word weak, but doubt you are looking at medial causes.

Here is what I know.
I've had several concussions. I guess I always was kind of a cocky asshole anyway and drinking didn't help that, pre concussions.
Post concussions. I went the total opposite direction as everyone suggests and gained massive amounts of empathy. As for drinking? I wasn't an asshole per say, but I don't make sense. It's like 7 beers (I've always drank fast) now does to me what an 18 pack used to do. Basically what I drink is pretty much legal limit, because if I have 4-5 it's like a 12 pack. Again not violent, I will eventually get upset, but people really have to push their luck and far more patient than the average person. After a few attempts to find the sweet spot on how fast and how much alcohol I could handle post concussions, I gave up and went back to being sober.
Weed? Absolutely no side effects. A little goofy, like anyone else, but otherwise good to go.
I read years ago, the problem with people who smoke pot daily is when they start.
I've never smoked daily, I don't think anyone probably should. But I guess when you start smoking every day certain parts of your brain stop developing. So you can understand it's adverse effects on people who smoke a lot before age 22 or so, when the brain is completely developed.

As for this story. It is sad. It's sad to see people piss away opportunities.
Other than that, I can say, he probably doesn't do himself any favors in healing himself or anyone if he won't even talk about it, much less apologize and recognize everyone from the victims to his own family that he has hurt before he became this new man.
As was mentioned, there could have been other drugs or maybe he was abused, we don't know.

I thought the big super recruit from the Hayden Fry era, I think he was a lineman from Atlantic. He didn't pan out on the field, would be considered a "bust" today, but he developed as a person and worked hard and matured off the field and talks about his career for "Where are they now?" stories every once in a while.

That was ferentz (blake larsen). Hayden’s was Willie Guy, the receiver out of Memphis

I'm not going to try to psycho-analyze the guy, but I will tell you this. If he thinks he's going to get out of prison and jump to the NFL, he's wrong. I pity the first woman he meets after facing this reality. The guy is going to end up right back in prison, and I just hope he doesn't kill someone.

I'm guessing the guy didn't get nicknamed Bone Crusher because of his marijuana habit
