Army Really Got Screwed

They finished 9-2 and got screwed out of a bowl game because teams didn't want to play them. I hope a spot opens up, I always enjoy watching that offense.

Stuff like this is why the bowl system is screwed up.

It's a bummer ... But honestly, a lot of those kids are ready to go home at this point. I haven't looked into USMA and USNA, but at least for my alma mater the cadets have been quarantined to base since they returned in the summer. I am guessing it's been the same situation for the former too schools. A bowl game against a Pac 12 team would have been great since the service academies rarely play the Power 5, but any other matchup is just eating into well-deserved time off.

Army finished with a great win. The deck is stacked against mid-majors in general (pun intended) and the independents not named Notre Dame in particular.

My hunch is, by the end of the week, they will have a good choice of bowl games to go to, and some bowls will have to be cancelled. My hunch.

It would have been interesting to see how the defense would have handled that option.

That’s a game you have to prepare for. I remember Georgia Tech threw the option at Iowa a few years ago.

As far as I'm aware, the Army/West Virginia game is still on.

I love the service academies both for what they represent to our country as well as the tradition and story lines they bring to the college football world. That said, I would not be looking forward to an Iowa/Army matchup. We've already got something of a dud matchup (Missouri), who I suspect we'll beat handily...against Army, I think that's a game where Iowa has in the backups at the start of the 4th Q. Maybe that's good as far as getting the backups and deserving 5th yr seniors game reps, but probably not so good from a fan perspective.

I do hope Army gets to play in their bowl. It's a weird year and I'm sure they played whatever schedule they were able to cobble together. I give them props for managing to find 11 games but, the fact is, the closest thing they've got to a quality win is beating a 3-3 Air Force team (which is at least a mid-pack Mountain West program). The two other decent FBS programs Army played this year (Cincinnati and Tulane) both beat them comfortably. Barring a covid catastrophe on the depth chart (in which case I think Iowa would be more likely to cancel than play), I have a hard time picturing Iowa not mopping the floor with them.

Sorry, I really don't meant to pick on Army. I meant what I said - I love the service academies, I like having them in the college FB mix, I hope they get their bowl. I'm just saying the 9-2 isn't so shiny when you look closer and I personally would prefer to play a tougher opponent.

Yeah, that's strange. I got a news feed this morning stating WVU backed out due to COVID.
