Are we seeing the beginning signs of IMPROVEMENT???

While there were some parts of the game today where the team struggled, the basketball they played between the May shot block in the first half and when they had the big lead in the second half was in my opinion some of the best of the year and was "VERY ENTERTAINING". I think today's game showed that there is hope for this group the balance of this year.

Now, I think they will struggle mightly in a very strong Big Ten, especially on the road, but I think they also will surprise some people and get a couple more wins at CHA. I still believe this team will end the year with 4 Big Ten wins and the progress shown by individual players will be enough to make us look forward to what this team can do as players mature.

I know some don't want to hear it, but unless you are one of the top tier programs that gets blue chippers every year you must build your program to rely on the upperclassmen to be your base and then have the younger players fill in the quality minutes needed for the upperclassmen to get a bit of a breather. Right now we do not have this at Iowa and we won't until Gatens, Fuller, Brommer and Tucker have at least another year and a half under their belts. Once they are seniors, May, Cougill and Payne will be juniors, Brust, Marble, McCabe and Larson will be sophomores, then and only then will we really see if it is going to work for Coach Lick.

I think we can all agree that Fuller has shown trememdous improvement now that he is healthy. While Gatens has struggled a bit with his shot this year, his defense is much improved over last year and his shot will come around. Cole is improved and we are even seeing some glimpses of hope in relation to Brommer that many people on this board had written off a month ago and figured he would transfer at the end of the year.

Improvement by individual players is what truly defines good coaching. Certainly x's and o's are important, but if you can't get the players to improve the x's and o's won't matter. Most of the people that wanted our previous regime gone always pointed to the lack of individual player development. I believe we are beginning to see the individual player development occur and I can't wait to see what happens once the new practice facility is available to give these players more time to work on their games.

What I saw was Cougill riding the pine, getting one minute of action, making a freshman mistake, getting pulled and never sees the floor again.

What I saw was Brommer maturing as a player simply because he is getting minutes.

what I saw was Licks kid looking completely out of place on a D1 floor who got bailed out about 3 or 4 times by the other Iowa players to avoid turnovers.

What I saw was Fuller taking control.

What I saw was a very poor opponent in Penn State.

What I saw was a very good player (Battle) with no supporting cast and yet no Iowa player could defend.

What I saw was probably the worst 10 minutes of basketball to start the game.

I'm actually really encouraged after seeing Fuller begin to step up and Brommer...folks I was ready to run Lickliter out with a pitchfork...but maybe I'll just settle back in and see what happens over the next year. the incoming recruits are looking like pretty dang good players.

Guys settle down we beat an 0-5 Penn. State for God's sake and we almost blew that. We couldn't contain Battle at all. We will not win at Happy Valley later either.

Penn State's average margin of loss in conference...3 points per game, including a 1 point loss at Illinois...

Guys, un-settle down and enjoy the fncking win you freaking whiny b!tches...

Edit: That wasn't specifically aimed at you seepig...just fans in general who don't want to enjoy a win.

I am confident we won't win at PSU as well. We don't play there this year, so I am actually very confident we won't lose there either. :)

I'm beginning to like this Shane character.

+1 and what amazes me is that people will have plenty of chances to whine, b!tch and moan following losses, as we will lose a lot more game this season. My advice would be sit back, enjoy a win, and your b!tching and moaning can commence again shortly after the next loss.

Its hard to enjoy a win when you know that every win that our current head coach gets may save his job. If I thought they'd shown even the slightest bit of improvement over the past two and a half years I would have loved todays win unfortunately thats not the case. I just want to be done with the guy so we can get back to being and average, entertaining basketball team.

If "a win is a win" is a good enough mantra for the football team, then it is good enough for the basketball team. And it doesn't matter whom the opponent is.

My opinion is the offense looked better when it was "up-tempo" in the half-court. That's not the best way to describe what I mean, but it seemed like a lot of shots came easier outside of the set plays that people are complaining about.

Honestly, we must have the most miserable fans in college basketball right now. We just won a game right? I think everyone on here understands we are not going to a post season tournament, or going to win very many more games this year. There has been PLENTY of negative posts about the basketball team this year. If you can't handle a positive post go visit one of them and be miserable there. Myself, hopefully along with a few others, are actually going to ENJOY wins when they come, because they won't come often this year. Go Hawks!

I saw Alot of Hustle from this team yesterday. They looked like they wanted the win. Hustle gets you far and now this team needs to keep with improvement and maybe win some games. Iowa has some games that are toss-ups. Lets wins those and maybe knock off one of the top teams and grow from there.

I was actually kind of thinking the same thing if you're referring to the earlier part of the second half where we were building the lead and the pace of the game was picking up. I remember the announcers commenting on the pace.

Maybe a better team than PSU would run us out of the gym if we went more uptempo, and I know we don't have the depth right now to play an uptempo style anyway. One thing I know though, is that I was really enjoying the game for those few minutes when it was up-and-down the floor, and we were building the lead.

When PSU called timeout after that segment of the game, this is just a guess, but I would bet even money that Lickliter told the team to slow it down. The game seemed to go back to the half-court style after that.

You know what, I have already taken my dose of Kool Aid earlier, when Iowa beat Drake, I was on this board wowing about oll of the positives I saw, then they played SC St. and built on that.

Then, they started playing real teams, and lost their next 4 games by an average of 15 points.

My point is that I already bought in on "This team is imporving", and my bet crapped out. I three point win at home over the worst team in the league is not enough to make me take another sip. I wouldn't say that I am negative (although there is no question I am negative), but I am more cynical.

Did you read my post? I said we will lose a lot more games yet, because this isn't a good team. I didn't say get on the bandwagon, or drink the kool aid. I said lets enjoy the win. The haters can get back to hating when we get kicked in the teeth at Michigan St..........

I don't know...is Minnesota considered one of the top tier programs? Their new coach seems to be doing just fine in his third year? So what don't we want to hear? Smith didn't seem to have too many problems rebuilding his program did he?

Just a reminder that the comment about being a top tier program doesn't hold water anymore...depends on the coach, his recruiting ability, and the style of play. Smith and Lickliter are like black and white (no pun intended--little bit maybe).

I don't think there is any doubt that T. Smith has the upper hand on Lick as far as recruiting ties. So, it would be much easier for him to build a team faster wouldn't it? I am certain Lick will get there in time, as partially proven by next year's recruiting class ranking. I am sorry you do not have any patience whatsoever and cannot see the big picture. I am sorry that you feel that every single transfer that Lick has had is due to Lick and only Lick. I am sorry that some of us choose to be optimistic about a dismal situation why others choose to complain and criticize. Lick will turn this program around in the next two years if most of you don't continue to try to run him out of town like past Iowa coaches!

Every single thread, no matter the topic, you are negative with your comments! You are not the only one, but seriously it gets old! I truly wonder if some of you are just unhappy people? I mean if the only thing I could muster up is a negative post, I would seriously wonder to myself why I even post in the first place?

I'm going to take that win and run with it. We know they're going to be few and far between from here on out, so savor it Hawk fans. It put me in a good mood all day yesterday. A win is a win is a win.
