apparantly there's a big difference

on expectations. Bball message board almost unreadable. Seriously, can ANYONE say we are not significantly improved from the last 5+ years in both talent, intensity, etc.

What the hell thought we were going to win 25 games this year, not have close wins, contend in maybe the best B1G ever in basketball, and make the NCAA's.

my God, everybody wants everything now now now. Fran in 2.2 fricken years in and has Completely turned around a lifeless program, vastly improved rectruiting, and brought some excitement...

...apparantly he brought some crybabies that want wins NOW. newsflash, we are better, but not great. btw, Wichita State and VT who played out of the *** with some help from the refs ARE NOT bad losses.

maybe i'm just all full of pi$$ and vinegar today, maybe i'm mad that Greg Davis might be staying, who know.

yeah, yeah..."it's a message board, if I don't like it don't read it", "ignore is a great feature".........it's not that it's stupid(although it is), it's the whining......NOW GET OFF MY LAWN !!!!!!!!!!!

It also comes from the fact that our basketball program has been crap for the better part of the past 12 years, and the football team stinks now, too. People are sick of losing, and I can't say I blame them (and I am just as sick of it as ANYBODY, I assure you). I do get your point though, Walker, and you are correct. Rebuilding this basketball program was not going to be an overnight process given the shape Lick left it in.

For me, I'm just hoping to build on last year. We're not there yet, but in a couple of months, it might be different. One thing is that I think this team is improved from where they were at this point of the season LAST YEAR. We haven't lost at home by 15 to Campbell, at least.

I posted a thread about tempering expectation and got blasted even Sportstalent told me I would be eating my words
its one thing to be excited as people should be as this team is one to be excited about,
but way to many people put their expectations sky high.. just like they have the last 2 year for the FB TEAM. to high a expectations lead to to big a let down and people going off the deep end by wanting players benched in favor of somebody else and coaches fired.

The basketball and football programs are nowhere near the same situation IMO. KF has been our coach for 14 years, and the trend has been downward in recent years. Fran inherited a mess, and is still working on cleaning it up (only a bit over 2 years as our coach). Whose to say for sure whether Fran will ever get the hoops program to where KF once had the football program, but I think a little more patience is in order with the basketball program than it is with the football program at this point, given the circumstances of each. Criticism of the football program is warranted, in my book. Get back to me at the end of this season, or next year, regarding the hoops program and we'll see where we are.

The "We aren't back" thread is about as pathetic as they come. Very few rational thoughts there. For whatever reason people expect excellence even though Fran only has 2 of his own recruiting classes on this team.

Also Iowa is back to the Tom Davis press/up and down style. It appears that many one here either didn't watch that era of Iowa BB or have forgotten. That system works against poor athletic teams. However when you run that against WSU and VT who actually have some guys who can run the floor, its going to turn into trouble. Lots of layups and wide open 3's on kick-outs.

Its a very exciting brand of BB but it opens things up for athletic teams to get on a roll. My only beef with it would be wanting to see Fran switch things up on D like he did last night more often. That zone really helped for awhile.

Best B1G ever? How old r u? The bottom 1/2 of BIG is not good. Used to be almost anyone could beat anyone on a given day. Like when Mathews hit a calm 50 footer to beat Magic the year MSU was national champs. The schedule has been so weak there is no way to tell where the Hawks are. There are glaring weaknesses that aren't easily improved without a change in talent. Specifically Iowa needs several 6-6 to 6-8 guys that are really athletic. Not there.

Why is this thread posted in the Basketball forum? I think it goes in the new Whiny Babies forum.

What, there's no place for anyone to stand up for Fran and the work he is doing to rebuild the program? I agree with the OP and the first response. Now GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

I agree with most of what you say, and I like what Fran's doing with the program. I am confident he'll get it done.

But I also go back to comments made by my most favorite coach ever regarding moral victories. Even -- in fact, especially because of -- as he was cleaning up the mess he inherited, Hayden Fry refused to believe in moral victories and chewed out anyone who did. He wanted to win. Anything less was not acceptable. It's what you expect of your program, and what you'll accept.

While I'm sure he sees progress since he arrived in Iowa City, I strongly doubt Fran is happy with where the program is.

Good post, I think a lot of fans were just happy to be excited about basketball again which probably raised expectations too high. For me, I'll be happy as long as this team improves over the course of the season. Next year, will be the first year I have real NCAA expectations.

I'm 36, and you picked that ONE thing to pick out? I remember full well when the Hawks were much better in basketball, when the B1G was great, and when the FB was much worse. You missed my Entire point....

so, how old are you?

You tell people to temper expectations, but you predicted them to make the NCAA tournament.....Will your high expectations lead to a big let down, and wanting coaches fired if we don't make the big dance?

The team is better than Lickliter's squads of D2 players, but debatable whether or not this team, based on W-L, will fare better than Alford's teams that didn't make the tournament. With that being said, I agree that it is too early to freak out or throw McCaffrey under the bus, but at some point he needs to recognize he is not at Siena and isn't going to win many games with a team full of guys with swimmer builds. He has had 3 years to get some bulk in here to help us in the paint, but has opted to go with Olaseni and Meyer instead. I commend him for Gessel, Woodbury, Clemmons and Ingram, but guards cannot cure the ills we face down low on both ends of the court. Any team we play with size down low is going to negate Woodbury, White, Basabe and McCabe, which turns into a 3 point shooting team, which hasn't exactly been a strength. The team will no doubt improve as the season progresses, but the schedule will get progressively more difficult as well. It's tough to watch us get smoked on the boards, loose balls and give up easy baskets because of poor defense (again).

Were your expectations so low that getting blown out by a team returning 3 scholarship players was considered par for the course?

people are taking it too far, but I doubt the WSU and VT games met the expectations of any Iowa fans entering the season.
