The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936. Over 81 years and 1,119 polls, a total of 167 schools have been ranked. To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point for each weekly appearance) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 Points). Here are the all time rankings:

1. Ohio State 1,128 pts
2. Oklahoma 1070
3. Notre Dame 1045
4. Alabama 1039
5. Southern Cal 980
6. Nebraska 913
7. Michigan 910
8. Texas 826
9. Florida St 730
10. Florida 689
11. LSU 668
12. Penn St 655
13. Miami of Fl 649
14. Tennessee 635
15. Auburn 580
16. Georgia 577
17. UCLA 536
18. Texas A&M 489
19. Michigan State 448
20. Washington 446
21. Clemson 439
22. Arkansas 418
23. Pitt 358
24. Wisconsin 351
25. IOWA 334
26.
Colorado 325
27. Georgia Tech 320
28. Ole Miss 298

83. CyClowns 40 (pathetic)

The Hawkeyes added to their total points this year by being ranked for several weeks at the beginning and at the end of the season. Late season wins over Michigan and Nebraska really helped.

Pitt being above Iowa is a bit of a bite, but then I rememver the Dorsett/Majors years. Other than that probably a resonable list. Goofers of old might whine.

only one that really surprised me was Michigan State. The top 17 is a catalogue of the old guard, for sure.

Welp, looks like all we need to crack the top ten is 15 national championships and 17 straight years of being ranked every week.

I could go for that.

To put in perspective how unbelievable those teams' histories are, if we won every single game for the next 15 years, winning a title each of those years and being ranked number one every single week, we'd still be behind where Ohio State is right now. And that's with 14 weeks of rankings in the modern era of the CFP.

I'm not saying that to bash Iowa. Just saying that because, wow.

Ohio State has been terrific for a long, long time. That's why they call it the cradle of college football

if you go back and look at who pedo state actually played in the 70's and 80's it's pathetic. One maybe two legit teams a year and that's it. The majority of their schedule each year looks like most teams beginning of the season non conference games.

And Nebraska.

The Big8 wasn't any deeper than the Big10-West is.

Some clarification or context is necessary with this too 25 ranking of all time, too.

Much of the AP poll's history ranked 20 teams and not the current 25.

While this isn't going to affect most teams as far as their position on the list it would effect the gaps somewhat as the mid- and lower-tier of the top 25 would tend to have appeared between spots 21-25 and gained a point for each week.

Not much better than Oklahoma and Nebraska only playing one game a year. Against each other.
