Anyone Suprised

Is anyone one suprised at what seems like very big time lineman who have committed over the last couple of years. We brought in Donnal and Scherff this last year and Blythe appears to be the only OL commit so far this year. It just seems like we don't have that much depth unless Kirk is pretty confident in what he has in the wings. He might be looking at some of these TE commits and others as part of his future in the OL. Just wondering what others thought.

I'm willing to guess that Iowa takes on around 3 or 4 OL commits this year and that is including Blythe. If you watch how Iowa has been handling their OL recruiting, I'm inclined to believe that the Iowa coaches seem to believe that they have a very good shot of landing a number of the top guys they've offered on their board. If they weren't, then they would have offered more guys by now.

The thing that you have to remember is that Iowa is involved in the recruitment of a number of high quality OL prospects ... and such guys often don't pull the trigger right away. Here it simply pays to be patient and wait for things to play out.

the OL has 3 Sr's out of the 10 available spots in the two deeps and 4 sr's out of the 19 lineman on the roster (one of those is a long snapper). we have Blythe currently and I are still sitting good on a couple OL recruits (Nick Martin, Patrick Flavin, Jordan Walsh, Anthony Zettel and Jack Allen), I wouldn't be surprised to get two of these and be good this year. Just my opinion.

As we continue to put out more top quality o-line prospects I think we can afford to be a little more selective. I don't doubt that o-line is a place where we may have the luxury of waiting a bit longer for the big fish. I suspect that we'll be okay with the o-line recruiting when all is said and done. You have to like the names we're chasing and we can afford to be a little patient. We don't plan on any of the recruits breaking into the starting line up and who knows where some of kids with big frames may wind up playing 3 years from now.

We have to keep reminding ourselves it's still early. It's a long time until signing day.

Just remember our OL next year will be fairly young - at most we're starting 2 seniors - JVV and Koeppel, w/ a sophomore (James Ferentz) and junior (Hundertmark/Gettis) as backups. And while the depth is inexperienced, I get the impression there is some confidence in the players that are waiting to step in and prove their value.
