Anyone else jealous of "middle of pack" teams having success?

I'll be first to admit this, but is anyone else jealous of teams like Kansas St., South Carolina, Florida State, Georgia, etc. currently having success? I like to think of these teams comparable to Iowa, a middle of the pack team every year in their conference with some school "tradition" who are usually picked as dark horses and every couple of years come up just short in winning their conference. In my opinion Iowa will not become an elite program, at least anytime soon, same as these teams listed above. It seems like both Iowa and say Georgia will have years were they come really really close to winning a conference championship and have success, but will then return to their average 8-4 team the next couple of years, go to a Jan. Bowl game but cannot turn the page to become "elite" programs. I guess having a cruddy season made me realize that we will have Orange Bowl seasons every once in awhile but will always be behind say a Ohio St, Michigan as in Iowa's case, Texas, Oklahoma as in KSU's, or a Florida and Alabama as in Georgia's case. It currenlty stinks seeing these teams have success right now and to see Iowa sliding down as a program these last 3 years. /rant , kinda pointless post but sucks seeing programs I like to compare to Iowa success wise in other conferences doing good right now and Iowa on the downhill. But in the back of my head I know there gunna go back to be a middle of a pack team who cannot turn the corner to become elite programs.

If I were you I'd bump this thread ever couple of weeks, read it to yourself about 3 times, dwell on it, print it, put it on your mirror, read it as you brush your teeth. Let me know how that works out for ya.

k.

I was with you until you said Florida State and Georgia.

Agreed completely. The success those programs have had in the past isn't even comparable to what Georgia and FSU have accomplished. Add in the fact that both states are recruiting hotbeds loaded with talent and they're on a totally different level. FSU's biggest problem is underachieving and as much as I hate saying it Georgia's bigget problem is their conference.

Historical frame of reference - of the teams mentioned by the OP, you're really looking at 3 tiers:

Florida State - 473 program wins, .664 winning %, 2 National Championships
Georgia - 748 program wins, .645 winning %, 2 National Championships

Iowa - 595 program wins, .531 winning %, 1 National Championships
South Carolina - 555 program wins, .506 winning %, 0 National Championships

Kansas State - 475 program wins, .439 winning %, 0 National Championships

Of the teams mentioned, only Iowa & South Carolina can truly lay claim to "middle of the pack".

Florida State & Georgia could both make cases for being top 10 all time programs.

Kansas State is historically awful. A notch worse than even Iowa State.

Yep. Kansas St. is the only one of those teams that is comparable to Iowa. All the rest have a lot more talent right in their back yards.

I think you can throw South Carolina in there, too. Sure, there's a lot of talent nearby, but the Gamecocks tend to suck hind tit down there, even in their own state.
