Any one else think the QB battle should be reopened after today?

Don't get me wrong Jake didn't play terrible today.. There was a lot of pressure in the back field all 2nd half, but the first half he missed two deep balls pretty bad, and did have a pretty awful pick. On top of that, the three and outs, and the secondary being mediocre just plain hurt. Yes, the running game/blocking just wasn't there today, but the plays were still there in the passing game.

The big thing I'm curious about is last week we saw Beathard throw an excellent deep ball, and he also showed he knows how to run the read option quite well. Yes, we have an extremely small showing of what CJ can do, but I think he showed enough last week to at least open up the battle in a game. I'm just curious what everyone thinks.. I would think against tOSU we have a game where we can try some things out no?

Well, you got a starting qb who has good poise, can pass the short to medium ball well and can make some good runs, but has a terrible deep ball. If you can't pass the ball deep well, it will be tough for Iowa to win another game.

Rudock started slow...just like Drew Tate did just about every single week in 2004 and Ricky Stanzi for his first year and a half. No, I don't think about a change at QB.

I'm not saying change him out. I just want to make sure we don't have Brad Banks sitting on our bench.

Rudock is the least of my concerns. Hard for any young QB to have a good game when the offense rushes for less then 30 yds. I'm more concerned that the Hawk Defense gave up big pass yardage to a very young/inexperienced QB. Doesn't bode well for our pass defense considering the passing attack's they will face the remainder of the season.

This.

More concerned with the play calls in the 1st and 3rd quarters when it comes to the offense.

Nobody is suggesting that it was on him today. But when your only big play guy is a wide out, you gotta have a qb that can throw a good deep ball to him to have any chance to even have a big play.

You have to be able to run the ball. Iowa couldn't today. 16 attempts. Any discussions or criticisms about Rudock after this game, aside from that lollypop INT in the first half, are pretty pointless and misguided IMO

It absolutely should be opened up...but won't. My reasons are as follows:

1. Rudock doesn't have enough arm strength. He's already had a lot of under thrown deep balls.

2. Poor decision making. I realize he's a first year starter, but his picks aren't due to gunslinging like Stanzi's were, or due to trying to make a play deep and having a defender make a good play. He's throwing them right to the other team.

3. Lack of big play ability. Some of this is on Davis and his handcuffing, but I just don't see Rudock being able to make the type of plays Tate or Stanzi could. We need a game changer at QB, not a game manager.

Ok, very good point. And please know that I think JR is good. He just doesn't have a good deep ball.
