I saw Tom Norman last week. He was pimping his old friend, Kirk Speraw. That would be fine with me as Speraw has been a head coach for 15 years. The former Sioux City native and Iowa Hawkeye has been a head coach for 17 years. He would be a fine #1 assistant. How could Iowa not hire a coach named Kirk?

Derek Thomas would be another good hire. He's a good recruiter that has a lot of contacts.

I just haven't heard much momentum around Speraw. I know that Thomas is a name that Fran has had put before him a few times. I would suspect things could get taken care of by the end of this week

Didn't I read somewhere that part of Speraw's problem that he didn't get the recruits he needed at UCF? On the other hand, he did get a few kids out of Chicago including Jordan's kid.

I'm not sure who Derek Thomas is, can someone give some more info?

Im not 100% sure but is this the Derek Thomas you are referring to?

He used to be the Head Coach at Western Illinois and is now an assistant at Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle, or something like that.

The good news is that other than meeting with Marble, who seems to be in the fold anyway, he's done with handholding the current/former signees for now, and at least he and Francis can get after the recruiting.

Putting the right staff together is still his number one priority, he should not rush it.

Actually, Derek Thomas and Tracy Webster are two of the most respected asst. coaches in the Midwest. Their connections, if either were to be hired, would be invaluable.

Thomas is my choice as he played in St. Louis, knows Chicago and Detroit very well.

Derek Thomas was just named the top assistant coach at Division 1 mid-major's by Hoop Scoop, a college b-ball publication and website based in Louisville.

I hope the Hawks go after him.
