Any change to the tailgating rules?

I saw that it had been addressed by Barta and have seen talk of it...but nothing official. I emailed him to try and get an official word but haven't gotten anything back yet. I'll be at my first game under the new rules and in a university lot(The parking ramp on melrose next to the hospital) and I wanna make sure to stay away from tickets. Any know of anything?

Nothing has really changed going into this week. Just don't wander around on public property in Iowa City with an open container and you will be fine. If you are in University Heights it's still OK to have the open container as they said they are not interested in pursuing those people. Otherwise after week one's debacle I think the cops have really pulled back their enforcement.

Hard alcohol has always been a no-no the last few years so if you bring it, keep it hidden. I heard the 1st week they were searching peoples cars for liquor but I think Barta got an earful from the fans so they aren't doing that anymore. Same with the drinking games, the 1st week the cops were going all Gestapo on people but because too many people got ****** at Barta they cut back on that too. I can't use last week as a benchmark because the weather was crappy and not many people were tailgating but for the ISU game I saw a bunch of people playing beer pong and such and cops just rode on by.

Sounds to me like they understand that they've gone too far. I'll be making my first trip of the season this week so I can't really comment on what's happened before, but from Barta's comments they want to focus specifically on the "problem" people. Seems like they want to make sure nobody gets violent or beligerent but aside from that they're going to be relaxed and take a big step back.

They have relaxed a lot since the first game, I believe mostly due to the hate mail Barta received. A couple cops watched us play flippy cup at the ISU game. They were doing the "safety" checks on drivers after the ISU game as I would expect they will do on Saturday.

I really hope they don't. Since they are expecting everybody to leave right away the roads are going to be jammed. The last thing we need is something else to jam everything up.

Sounds to me like maybe it more so the cops that were taking it over board and not Barta. I've always seen Barta as being a very fair and understanding guy and it seems like the police and security maybe used the new rules as a crutch to do a little more than they are supposed to.

Thanks for all the advice though.

What do you guys mean by the safety checks on drivers? Were they literally pulling people over that were driving just to check?

They set up "safety" checkpoints but in all reality they are looking for drunk drivers. I myself have never seen one but I know they have been doing them. Like I said, I hope they wouldn't do it tomorrow night just because they are forcing everybody to leave right away. It's already going to be crowded on the streets getting out of there adding checkpoints to the mix will just slow it down even more.

over by finkbine they pulling over every like 10th driver or something into the church lot and checking to see if they were drunk..i mean something about safety.

In all fairness, the last thing we need is a fatal accident caused by a drunk driver. That would REALLY jam everything up...

I asked cops directly if we could play beer pong, he said (in front of three other cops riding a golf cart) that they weren't going into any tailgates to break up any drinking games.

GAME ON!
