Any chance we start 3 freshman next year?

Ogelsby was the highest rated of the 3 freshmen and is struggling, i am still not sure how a incoming freshmen is going to knock Marble or White out of the lineup.
the reason most expect Gesell and Woodbury to start is the fact Both fill a immediate need at the Point and Center, maybe Clemmons does come in and earns the starting PG spot, but it will be hard to see 3 freshmen start, and i'll take that bet on White starting at the 3 next year with Marble at the 2, i expect Basabe to go back to basics and get his starting spot back, with McCabe splitting time with him at the 4, but if he does not get his yit together and McCabe doesn't get away from fouling like he does i see Meyer getting a solid look next year, otherwise i see him RS to bulk up and help breakup the classes

No one is predicting White and Marble won't start, it just depends on where.

How many spots does that leave?..............THREE

Do I think 3 freshman will start, No. But the question was "is there a chance" and there is a slim chance.

I don't need to see Clemmons, Ingram or Gessell to know they will be updgrades. For those that haven't caught on yet, we can't guard anybody (including Nebraska, NW and PSU) not to mention the upper tier teams. We are so slow and unathletic at too many positions, thus our defensive woes. May, McCabe, Oglesby can be nice role players, but if these guys are starting next season, we are in trouble.

I am confident McCaffrey will use his last scholarship on somebody who will compete for PT next season. He does not strike me as a guy who wants to suffer another season of misery and risk losing the fragile fan interest that a few early wins sparked. My friends are back to "we suck and I am not watching any more games". I am a die hard like many others in here, but the last few losses have hurt. We are digressing at the wrong time to say the least.

I' ok with all those combinations....I just hope we mix in some defense, otherwise it really doesn't matter. Fran is going to have to put some emphasis on the defensive end. I question his teaching of defense at this point. But, everybody loves the offense......

One thing folks seem to overlook is the comments made by Fran regarding JO shooting ability. I'll admit I was hoping for more this season from him based on those pre-seadon coach comments but at the same time I think Josh this year is trying too hard and personally look for him to be "that guy" who surprises everyone (not that I don't expect others to also improve).

JO reminds me of Jeff Moe, he didn't start but he was great at instant energy and points off the bench, not every player can be a starter, but they can be great role players, MacCausland wasn't fast but he could shoot, which at .50% was good, and its not always about foot speed as it is about passing the ball, that was a trademark of Mr. Davis, passing the ball, he had that little bounce pass into the middle that was a thing of beauty and was hard to defend

i think jo becomes a starter next year. he actually is a better all around player/talent than gatens was a frosh. he handles better, passes better, defends better, attacks better, he is quicker, he is longer. i give gatens the edg on shooting the 3 but i think jo will show he can do that just as well as gatens later on. i will also give matt the edge on rebounding but i dont think that will matter next year when woody and meyer get here to help out up front. matt had to play basically every minute his frosh yr and jo has matt in front of him.

i know that gatens is probably our best defender but he was terrible his frosh and soph yrs where jo is better already there. gatens must use his physicality to play d where jo is quicker and longer, he can learn the physical side.

gatens learned to attack the rim last yr as a jr. jo is already learning it. jo (though not shooting high % right now) is a great ft guy (like matt). matt under utilized this throughout his career until fran got here. jo will have 4 yrs of knowing how to do this.

jo wont be strapped like gatens was of trying to be the #1 guy when he really isnt that type of college player. he can be the secondary option and score a lot of points doing it.

jo will make a lot of heads turn next year because the pgs and center will allow him to step his game up. along with the fact that i believe fran's offense runs better with a face up 4 (white) i feel jo will be at the 2 spot with marble at the 3. but we will be able to dictate a lot of different match ups.

could we start 3 frosh? yes. will we? i think no unless there are some injuries that force it to happen.

Based on your prior reply is it safe to assume you have never seen these recruits play in person? If I am wrong let me know

Did I say I had? That was your irrelevant two cents.

Are you disagreeing with either of my statements that those two will be Iowas 2 best perimeter defenders and that Iowas biggest need for improvement is perimeter defense?

I don't have to have seen them in person to know this, there is plenty of information and video available.

My point is you are probably overvaluing the skills of incoming players because you have only seen them play via highlight videos, etc. Without seeing them play against Big Ten talent how are you so sure of their defensive prowess? I hope you are right but this stuff happens all the time, especially with a fan base starved for success

after tonight, the answer is a resounding NO, White was a mde basket away from his 3rd straight DBL DBL at 8 pts and 10 boards, Marble again showed how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands, with 13 pts, 7 Boards, 7 asst, and 4 steals with just 2 TO,
Basabe had 13 pts, 7 boards and 5 blocks, now of those 3 who is going to sit so you can have 3 freshmen start, without ever seeing them play at the next level, Gesell or Clemmons are the only 2 that need to step in and start, as we need point guards, everybody saw what happened to Marble when he got tired, he got carried away with his shooting

I don't know.

plus 1 or more... did a (COL) chortle out loud...

and smiling with all the possibilties.

Fran can recruit and is proving it.. Mel and Whitie to name a couple and next years class.

Fran can develop players such as Zach McCabe and Dev (albiet Mel has had a bump in the road)

Fran can coach... he has some great assistants with good game plans and is an in game great bench coach.

Wasn't the use of his bigs and walk-ons brilliant in the Indiana win w/o 2 original starters in Cartwright and May?

Finally, Fran communicates and is open and honest to the Iowa fans, no less the media and his players.
