Anthony ?Sapp? Clemmons? wild ride to Iowa City - The Daily Iowan

Glad to see him having success. It seems like he really enjoys being here. From article:

“I wore number 99 and played defensive tackle. One day I sacked the quarterback and they started calling me Baby Sapp. I was chubby but quick,â€￾ Clemmons said. “But as I got bigger, they couldn’t call me baby anymore so I got stuck with ‘Sapp.’ â€￾

Clemmons wasn’t sure the nickname would make it to Iowa City. His teammates, primarily junior guard Devyn Marble, made sure it did.

I wonder why he was so overlooked? It's not like no high profile coaches ever saw him play as he was on the top AAU team in Michigan! Very surprising no one else offered.

What do you consider high profile?

There are only so many scholarships to offer and maybe the coaches had players they felt were better already lined up. I guess you only have so much time to spend scouting/recruiting.

Maybe sportstalent might know more as he seems to be a guy who knows a good amount about recruiting in the state of Michigan.

Clemmons played HS ball with a top 100 guy (not sure on name but is at MSU) so I am guessing alot of coaches saw him play. They might not have been there just for Clemmons but they saw him and probably gave him a good look while they watched him play.

He was never a primary ball handler or scorer on his AAU team or High School team.

Denzel Valentine was on his HS team (MSU) and I am guessing Derrick Walton on his AAU team (Michigan).

Valentine's dad was HS coach, so Denzel had the ball most of the time.

Also, on his HS team they had a kid that took a ton of 3's off passes from Valentine. Anthony played off the ball and took the opponents best guard and shut him down. When I saw him in person he had some Cartwright in him...little out of control, but all the tools were there.

I know it is probably wwwaaayyy too early to say this but I think that Clemmons is already better than Cartwright was as a senior.

I think the fact he is starting as a freshman it says something that points to him being better. I thought Bryce was a turnover in waiting rather than an assist in waiting...I think the opposite of Anthony and this team has more talent than either team Bryce played on. Anthony's impact on this team is far greater than any impact Cartwright had.

I expect his play to only get better as time goes by.

Yeah, that is a great point. There were alot of people who just loved Cartwright, I never understood why. He was a good role player at times but extremely streaky shooter and it seemed like he was a turnover waiting to happen. Plus he was a horrible free throw shooter.

I am as excited about Clemmons as the next guy, but I don't see the point of of trashing Cartwright. When Cully Payne was injured and bailed, Bryce was a godsend. Led the Big Ten in assists his first year. Not to mention, there were several games last year we just don't win without his play.

Not trashing Cartwright...he was a player that was key to Iowa's improvement. He started shaky his first year, but finished well...again when Iowa really needed him.
