another "prevent offense" thread.

This. The offense didn't execute particularly well in the 2nd half, but it wasn't that conservative.

Or better yet, the PSU defense really stepped up in the 2nd half, which well coached defenses usually do after making the appropriate adjustments. Remember PSU had a better scoring defense that Iowa coming into that game. Alabama could only score 24 against PSU, so 17 points is not letting off the gas.

I am honestly floored that people are cmplaining about the play calling instead of the fact that the offensive line got pushed back two yards everytime Robinson got his hands on the ball.

1, 3, and 4 are hindsight arrogance. 2 doesn't apply with such a small scoring difference, IMO.

We were about 3 inches and one defensive/special teams breakdown away from a tie game.

Or 3 inches and one defensive/special teams breakdown and one pick 6 and one lost fumble run back for a score away from being down 14.

The people who are complaining about the play calling on Saturday are probably the same ones who stitched O'Keefe a new one over the bootleg against Northwestern.

There would have been a complete meltdown on this board if Iowa had experienced deja vu after stopping Penn State on the one-inch line. Stanzi fumbles the ball in the endzone and is out for three to four weeks. My only thought was do nothing stupid, run the ball up the middle three times and punt. In retrospect, that is what we should have done against Northwestern.

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. The season went south in a hurry last year because O'Keefe was not conservative deep in Iowa territory against Northwestern. Northwestern scored the go ahead touchdowns against Iowa because of the fumble in the endzone and an interception deep in Iowa territory. Northwestern only had 239 yards of total offense or 62 less yards than Penn State.

We use the prevent offense against Northwestern and we probably win the game and have a healthy Stanzi for the whole season.

The fact that there is even a debate on whether or not we should of beat Penn st. By more than 3 td's speaks volumes of how far KF HAS BROUGHT THIS PROGRAM! Go hawks!!!

Those complaining about the conservative play calling, i have to wonder if you even watched the game. Here are the possessions:

1) Got the ball on the 1/2 yard line, and got out to the 35 yd line and punted. This is an big deal, and a good offensive possession. Got us out of the hole, and kept Penn St. to their own 30 yd. line.
2) Started on their 20 yd. line, and had a 3 and out. 2 runs, one for negative yards, and the pass attempt Stanzi was sacked. Had to punt, and they get the ball at the 50 yd. line
3) Got the ball on our 5 yd. line. Keep in mind we now only have 13:00 min left in the game or so. First play run. Second play great screen to Arob, but called back because of a hold. Next play great screen pass to Morse for a 1st down, and a little breathing room, out to the 21 yd. line. Next play a deep pass to DJK for a 45 yd. gain. Incomplete pass by Ricky, next play a reverse to Sandeman, next play screen pass to Arob that would have been a first down, but he dropped it. Now 4th down and we punt to pin them on their 6 yard line. (How can anyone in their right minds call this possession conservative?)
4) D shuts them down, but their punter had a 76 yd. punt, and once again we are on our 15 yd line to start the next possession. But guess what, there is less than 8 min. left now, and you can bet we are going to shut it down at this point. Nope we didn't, we went run, pass, pass, and fell a yard short of the 1st down, so punted.
5) Now there is 4:30 left and we get the ball on the 22 yd. line. Got a 1st down, burn alot of clock, pinned then on their 18 yd. line, and there was 1:40 left in the game.

Now how do you call that "prevent offense"? We had 5 possessions in the half. How many 95 yd. drives or 99 yd. drives to you think Penn St. gives up in a year? My guess is one or zero of them. The goal of those possessions is to get yards back, and make sure they don't get a 40 or 50 yd. field to work with. So both of those possession were WINS for us.

Complaining about the O going conservative I get. Too bad in this case, it simply didn't happen. We didn't execute very well on O, and drives sputtered. Yet they moved the ball enough to keep the D out of short field situation. Penn St. was NOT going to score unless we gave them scores with TO or special teams.....the offense did their job perfectly in the 2nd half, they didn't turn it over, the kept the defense off the short field. One last thing....we beat them by more than we have EVER beaten Penn St.!

Great synopsis! I was at the game, fairly sober I might add, and could not remember in that detail. I think that pretty much ends the debate.
